My god... what an awful day.

I stayed as late as I could trying to do the job in the dark, but it wasnt happening, so I left the car (:() in the parking lot at work over night and crashed at my friends house. Came back the next day at around 9, and had at it in full daylight.

Took me about 3 hours. Not because its an inheriently difficult job, but because it's awkward and the lines are old and the pump I got wasnt an exact fit.

Im going to have to redo this soon, because of some jury rigging I had to do with the fuel lines (had to use an inline coupler), which means Ill have to drop the fuel tank. Im going to order a walbro pump ASAP and try and return this OEM one. If they wont take it back, Ill probably sell it on here for half what I paid. You'd only be interested if you didnt want to upgrade to a walbro pump.

My advice through all this?

If your fuel pump hasnt been replaced, REPLACE IT. There was NO warning. This isnt one of those things you should put off, especially if its your daily driver. Get a new pump and install it this weekend or whatever.

Im going to go curl up in a corner and cry for a bit now.

I'm sorry, man.

If it'll cheer you up any, you shouldn't actually have to drop the tank. You should be able to do everything from the access panel.

The fuel supply hose had to get hacked off, and I cant reach the hardline from the access panel to put on a new one

Ohhh... That sucks!

It may cost more money, but you might consider just getting a big length of fuel injection hose and running it all the way from the pump to the pipe that runs along the driver's side of the car.

You can replace 16, 20, and the hard pipe between them with one long piece of 5/16" EFI hose, and it is possible to do it without removing the tank.

So I got about 6 feet of fuel line, and Im just trying to figure out how to route it from the pump to the hardline to the front of the drivers side rear wheel

I dont want it to rub against suspension components or get near the exhaust

Any ideas?

Have it mimic the path of the stock pipe.

I removed the oval fuel pump access panel and the circular access panel on the other side, and reached in through them to route the hose. The hose runs around the back of the topmost hump in the tank and then back forwards, passes around the driver side of the tank, and runs down to meet the pipe on the side of the car. It all fits pretty neatly and with a minimum of slack.

Just to check, you got fuel injection hose, right? 5/16" SAE 30R9 hose?

I also put some plastic corrugated tubing over the hose for a little extra protection.

Theres not enough clearance between the tank and the chassis to follow the stock pipe

I understand. I'm just saying to kind of mimic it. Does the rest of what I said make sense? There's that hump at the top of the tank where the evaporative emissions control lines attach and stuff. Run the house around the rear of that hump and then hug the tank down to where it needs to end up.

I know you can do it. I did it, and I actually replaced the return line with hose as well, both wrapped in corrugated tubing. It was a very tight fit but it worked.

The only place I could find the hose fit was directly to the rear of the pump assembly, theres a small hole you can see pavement through

everywhere else I tried the hose was blocked

Trust me; it can be done. You may have to keep trying with different angles and while twisting, but you can do it. Maybe try with a piece of wire or a coat hanger first?

I don't think you can see pavement in the direction you need to push it.

Great! Less of a bitch than dropping the rear drivetrain and suspension so you could drop the tank, I'm sure.
