90 AWD L
Symptoms: Grinding Whine(sounds like noisy gears) coming from right rear of car. Only happens on coast and decel, not at all when accelerating. sometimes a clunk.
I thought it was the rear diff. Replaced it. No change.
The CV boots are all intact. Brakes arent dragging, and no signs of anything rubbing on the rotor.
No noticable play in the wheel bearing.
I have never had a rear axle(CV) go out. Can they sound like this?
Anyone ever have similar probs.

It sounds like the wheel bearing. There doesn't have to be play in the bearing for it to be bad.

Realize that I made that project out to be a lot bigger of a deal than it really was, so don't be discouraged by it.

So I replace the axle and hub assembly(JunkYard) on the side that the noise was coming from. Just to be sure.
NO CHANGE
I pulled the the strut, it appeared to be fine.
I checked all the rear bushings with a prybar, none were broken or abnormally loose.
Long annoying story short.
Little rocks were stuck in one of the rear sub-frame bushings. When the rear-end was loaded just right, It would shift the subframe, andit would make a terrible grinding noise.
Cleaned out the rocks and its quiet again
Well now I have a spare rear diff, rear right axle and hub.
