91 gr-2 don't fit! Need help

Post by ol'skoolwrx »

:x
I brought a pair of Gr-2 struts off Ebay from a vendor named Jdmwerks- awesome vendor. But the main problem that I ran into with the struts, is that the bottom hole is off about 2 inches from lining up with the bottom of the knuckle.

I've confirmed with kyb that he sent me the right struts, I just wanted to know is it possible that I could have 92 suspension and that's why they don't fit.

The struts that I have are 235063/235064 for the front and the rear
are 235067/235068.

Any help or suggestions would be very helpful.

Thanks Alex

The struts are different from FWD to AWD, as well as 89-91 and 92-94. If you got the latter, they will still fit, but the perches are slightly higher than the ones you have.

I assume that this isn't just an issue of shoving the knuckle around until the holes line up. You're saying that the top hole lines up properly? And, you're saying that the bottom hole is misaligned in the up/down direction NOT too far left/right?

Could be FWD vs AWD issue. I think there is sort of incompatibility between drivetrains, but I'm not sure if the incompatility relates to these mounting holes.

I really don't think the different years have an incompatibility, at least not in the mounting holes between 91 and 92. I have struts from an 00 RS on my 91. Normally incompatibility is in the spring perches - either height or diameter.

I believe the hub is different between the FWD and AWD.

The spring perches is the difference between the 89-91 and the 92-94, bolt holes are the same.

hey, thanks alot rallysam
you know your stuff, so correct me if I'm wrong but the perches are the holes that mates up to the knuckles for the struts to go on.

The perch is where the spring sits.

Installing struts tends to require a bit of muscling.

I've never had a problem with struts not bolting up. Unless it was a manufacturer error from Subaru or KYB.

If the top hole lines up, which direction is the lower hole offset? If the hole in the strut is behind the hole in the knuckle, pull the strut towards the outside of the car. If it's inward, push the strut away from you.

Use some elbow grease, and don't be afraid of breaking the strut. You wont.

The lower hole offset is about 2 inches inwards. we've tryed the same thing and nothing at all changed the out come of the bottom whole aligning up with knuckle.

I went down to NAPA to look at set of struts that they had for 91 legacy turbo, and holes were exactly the same they were on my car.

It must be user error then. If the strut is right, and the car is right, then you are possibly installing them incorrectly.

I'm not installing them, my buddy is and he is a Subaru techinican so I know that are being installed correctly.

What kinda of struts are you running on your car?
I will try to post some pics to show what exactly I'm talking about.

"Inwards"? The knuckle twists in and out. Sounds like you just need to muscle the knuckle until the holes line up.

If the two holes were too far apart, or too close together, then you would have an actual problem and wouldn't be able to mount it. But, then you would say the bottom hole is too far "up" or "down". Instead, you say "inwards", which means that it would line up if you just moved the knuckle. Put your back into it and give your typing fingers a rest :P

Any updates on this? What was the problem?

On a sidenote - how did you like the ebay seller? He said that he can get model year specific struts pretty cheap with shipping, even cheaper than tirerack or nopi.
