i need new heads
so i am trying to source a set of dohc heads, for my 22t. with intake manifold of course. i need to know what turbo heads fit best with lil modification. seems my heads are warped. what gaskets to use? how to idetify the heads, and also whether i need to even swap the intake manifold. and if anyone has a extra set sitting around that they wanna toss my way for a decent price. and where to find new head studs. instead of using my old head bolts.
i need answers. thanx guys

Not trying to kill Vincent's deal, but I do want to put some information out there. If those are the Ej20G heads I saw in the classifieds, they have a 57cc combustion chamber. Mated to an Ej22T bottom end they will give you a 6.3:1 CR. I hope you are planning on running a gianormous turbo and are ready for the off boost sluggishness. I personally think those heads are a great match for the EJ22T, but other's are fond of them.
DOHC Ej25 heads or Ej205 heads would give a better CR. Either of those heads will put you in the low to mid 7's for CR...

I'm sure there's a casting number on there somewhere, but you could also easily cc the chambers and see.douglas vincent wrote:If you have no clue which heads these are, is there a way to tell?

Yes. Pull off the valve covers. If they have the little stub rockers running off to the side to some HLA's they are Legacy Ej20G heads. Those will be the huge combustion chamber heads. They have a really steep "pitch" to the chamber and meet at a point up top.douglas vincent wrote:If you have no clue which heads these are, is there a way to tell?
When they went to the HLA's under the bucket design, the steepness of the combustion chamber, and the angle at which the valves entered the chamber, were both reduced. The later heads all have a more "domed" chamber that will be somewhere in the 45-49cc range depending on year. I don't have complete information on combustion chamber volume on all of the JDM Ej20 heads from 94-00, but they are all pretty close. If your heads have shims on the buckets, they are from '97+

HLA's are hydraulic lash adjusters. They have their proponents and their opponents. Their advantage is that you don't have to dink around with little shims to get the valve lash adjusted properly. The disadvantage is that max redline with them is 7200rpm or so.
AVCS (Subbie's VTEC) is an '02 and newer thing. It would take a hell of a lot of money and custom work to make it work on your car. It would probably cost more than the car is worth to do it right...

yea, i dont plan on running past 7200 rpm anyway. and i have delt with the shims before , they were a total bitch. i didnt want to do the avcs to my car. i was just curious. as to whether jdm heads had them before usdm did. that was it. it would be cool but ultimatly i dont think anytype of valve timing is necessary. when i have hot cams available.
honda has a great system. but with boost motors i just dont think its worth the money

See you think like me. You need a REALLY big turbo to justify revving past 7200rpm. I think the HLA heads are a great option for most of us. And the 90-96 heads (and motors) tend to be the cheapest ones. It's the best of both worlds.
