VF8 vs. VF10
I have a complete EJ20G that I am getting ready to swap into my 91' legacy turbo. The turbo that came with the 20G is the VF10. I would like to know which is the better turbo and why? does anybody have any advice on swapping out these turbo's? thanks guys

The difference between the VF8 and the VF10 is not enough to warrant replacement to me. Those turbos are too expensive to buy as an upgrade for a VF10. If you find a good deal (sub-100 bucks sounds good to me) go for it, otherwise it's not a big enough of an improvement and the money would be better spent elsewhere. You shouldn't need to change any lines though if you're using the complete EJ20G.

I have an Ej20G and vf10 on my car. The VF10 spools at around 3 grand, and I can't say for sure when it's out of its efficiency range but it hangs in there a little longer than the vf11. I think you could go to 15psi w/ a good intercooler setup. Do you have a VF10? Just stick with it, it'll be fine.

Dont misunderstand. The turbos are good in comparison to an 11, but the price they sell for is just too much. They aren't that close to 16g's, a 34 would be closer to a 16g. An 8 or 12 is not that big/good.
Think of it like engines, would you pay the same price as an EJ207 for an EJ20G?

No, the TD04 is much closer to the VF11...
The VF8 is VERY comparable to the TD05-16G, the major difference is the 16g has a larger hot side...
I got my VF8 just off the JDM boat for $115, and I LOVE it!!

Which is better? It really depends on what you want from the turbo, actually.
All pricing aside, the vf10 is about identical to the vf11. I don't know much about lag on the 2.0 block, but on the 2.2 the vf11 spools very fast. The vf10 is about the same size. The TD04 wrx turbo is about the same size as the vf10/11 as well. The vf8 is a little bit larger of a turbo, has a little bit more lag and a little bit more umpf. The vf12 is basically a redesigned vf8 from what I know, and it spools a little faster, I think. It is also a little bit larger, and from what I've read it is close to the TD05. So that will sum it up for you hopefully.
Pricing in the equation: If you can find a good deal on a vf8 go for it. I own one as well and it definately woke the car up. If you are driving leasurely the car doesn't feel like it has a lot of sudden getup and go, but you step on it and it will surprise you. If you are looking at paying 300-500 on the vf8, look around for a TD05, because you can find one of those for that price. The vf12 is rather rare and I haven't seen them for sale very often, but I haven't been looking for it, either.

If the VF8 is so close to the 16G why is the standard power of a VF12 (larger than a VF8) about 220whp whereas a 16G can hit 300whp relatively easily?
THEY AREN'T THAT CLOSE!
The 8 and 12 are larger than a 10 or 11 but not near a 16G.
This is just like the whole autos have vf11's and manuals have vf10's

Sorry to add to the confusion but dont forget the VF24...
Slightly smaller than the 16G but still good for 300hp on a 2.0 and less lag. I cant give a report on how it compairs to the stocker on the EJ22T as I havent put in on yet, but should be a great low lag street setup in the SS. I've read is comparable to the VF39.

No matter how broke I am... I always seem to find two cents.
That's only true of RS's, GT's all had VF10's manual or automatic.555BCTurbo wrote:btw...to set the record straight, in JDM Legacies the Auto's had VF10's and the 5MT's had VF8's

Manual JDM Legacy RS's only. (Direct imports to other countries aswell, like New Zealand, Germany, etc) Not countries where they have their own version like Austrailia and England.

300 hp has been seen on a TD04 as well, but it isn't the same size as a TD05 (that is with tuning of course).
Are you looking at respective boost levels as well Hardy? I'm not disagreeing with you I'm just asking. From the liberty boards I've heard that the 12 is close to the TD05, but he TD05 will give slightly better top end power.
If you are saying that the TD05 will give you 300 hp at the same boost and on the same engine that a VF12 will give you 220 hp, then I'd say you are correct. Yet from everything I've heard or read, the 12 is similar, but slightly less powerful. I thought the 220 hp was the stock horsepower on the overseas liberty/legacy. The TD05 won't give those cars 300 hp on stock boost will they?

boost pressure means nothing when comparing completely different turbos, so no.
