Almost 3 years and over 42k, now another fallen hero

Post by skid542 »

I had my first accident yesterday, with a 99 Silverado that was raised a tad. Everybody was alright. I was going a little faster than I probably should have, around 35-45 and he pulled out right infront of me, of course there was nobody anywhere near behind me or beside me, and procceded to stop for the yellow light and I couldn't get it shut down in time. There were three lanes at the light, he came out from a turn on clear to the right and pulled into the middle lane where I was. I slammed my brakes, locked the front tires a tad (10-15 ft light marks), and hit him square. I stopped considerably before the line and he stopped with his rears on the line. He had to back up a tad to get out of the intersection. When I say I had considerable room before the line, the tow truck had an easy car length ahead of him to the line when hooking me up. We got out and he was pretty cool, 20 yr local kid from the next county. I think he realized that we both f***ed up.
There was a cop waiting at the light to go across and saw it all and immediately pulled around. He came over and was pretty calm and cool about things. Within another minute there were two more cops that showed up and were pretty cool too. Long story short, the first cop gave me a ticket for following too close (I hit a guy from behind... what are you gonna do?), but esitmated damage at 1000 to the truck and 2500 to mine so it's non reportable. He also told the kid that I wanted to do it out of insurance and talking with him I think it'll be fine. The cop didn't say anything about driving too fast, question if I'd been drinking or anything (to which I was dead sober).

So the damage.

The truck has about a 3 inch mark on his bumper that will probably buff out and his trailer hitch looked like it got bent down a tad, ~5 deg. I centered his hitch, as in you can see where the hitch was on my bumer and it's literally less than 3/4 off center.

My baby took a solid hit to the front but the hitch came over top my main bumper support beam by about an inch and grabbed the formed support above it and took it back into the radiator and tilted that back. No airbags though. My engine was still running right after the hit, though it took a really wierd idle so I immediately killed it. There were no fluids on the road though. It looks like the accesory belt is still intact and that the radiator didn't actually hit my engine. The hood folded up and back appropriately with the latch staying closed. Blew out the headlights and corner lights. Something on the underside of his truck cut my bumper in one place and started to on the other side but we seperated before it did. So the bumper itself I think is alright, though the foam inside is definately cracked and rotated. It bent the tips of the corner panels in, just the front 3 inches, and I think they can be hammered out to well enough. It doesn't look like the main structural stuff took a hit which is good. My mechanic's/body shop is going to take a better look this afternoon and let me know. Hopefully the damage won't be too bad and I'll work on the engine stuff myself along with small stuff, whatever it happens to be.

Frank, I'm sending you a PM.

Shit happens, I was going a little too fast and he decided to not wait until the one car in the 3/8 mi stretch to go by before pulling out, not to mention the proximity issue :?, to stop for the yellow....

I know it's only metal and money, but damn. What a kick in the nuts.

So any advice on things in particular to look for in fixing things?

Sounds like it could have been A LOT worse. The only thing you'll need to watch out for with the repairs is little things that might have broke or bent that you've not yet noticed, which can nickle and dime you in the end.

Hope the costs don't mount too much, and glad to know nobody was hurt. :)

I wouldn't settle out of insurance. Tried that when my bike got hit. Guy seemed nice, turned out to be a dick. Glad I ended up doing it through insurance or I would have had a hassle on my hands.

But since your at fault, out of insurance saves you money in the long run.

Thats a bummer man. At least it didn't set off your airbag. That deer I hit set mine off.

I also happen to know that the plastic timing covers are spendy, as I paid $120 for three of them, which was pretty lame.

Sounds like it shoulnd't be too bad. I would think you could hopefully do it for less than $500 in used parts, depending on what they get around there. Didn't someone post that amazon.com hoods for $75 or something like that?

Well the kid called it in to my insurance company without talking to me first. So I got a call from my insurance asking about why there was a 1300 claim and by the time it was all said and done the kid was saying it might be more than 1300 and would need a rental car, yeah..., so long story short, it's all going through insurance and I have a good record so I'm getting an accident forgiveness and my rates won't go up and he won't get 1300 from my company... so I guess it worked out alright on that front.

As far as repairs... Frank is once again coming through for us BBS guys and can cut me a great deal on a grille and new lights but I'm afraid that the cost of fixing the radiator support and the bumper support is going to cost too much - please see my post in the Chassis forum.

So I finally got to look at my car in more detail - the main beam is indeed twisted and slightly bent. Even if I did the work myself parts would be approaching a 'new' BC and I don't have that much time. At that it still wouldn't look right either.

So I'm afraid I'm going to have to let her pass on :cry::cry:. I can't believe I'm having to do this but I can't justify any other alternative.

I am going to take her back home and start pulling off all the things I want to swap - wheels, brakes, etc. I am also now looking for another 93-94' BC Legacy. It has to be a manual and has to be NA (I can't afford the gas for a turbo, though I could still swap engines and have a EJ22T to build). So if anyone knows of any in the eastern US please let me know.

I also want to thank Frank for being so quick and helpful in finding parts and providing me with a great deal if I needed them. He's a great man to do business with and I still highly recommend to him.

Now a moment of silence please for another fallen Legacy - You were both a great car and a best friend and will always hold a place in my heart. May you rest in peace.

Thanks again guys.

that sucks, its very easy to get attached to a car you drive every day for 3 years, but maybe this is a good excuse to be on the lookout for a 5mt SS

Not to be a dick, but you should learn how to swerve. I dont know how many crashes I would have been in if I didnt move the wheel a little to one side to get out of the situation.

Dude, shut the fuck up

You have NO idea what the circumstances of the accident were, so you can't really pass judgement...
