Only runs on passenger side cylinder bank.

Post by chuck25 »

Hi, I have a 91 Legacy, and under 3700 RPM or so it only runs on the passenger side cylinders, over that it runs on all 4, any suggestions?

Flip the plug wires. Take them off of the drivers side and put them on the passenger side and vice-versa.

If the problem follows the wires, there's your problem.

How are you sure it's only using two cylinders for a while, then switching to four?

Probably feels serious hesitation and lack of power at all throttle positions, then at 3700 RPM everything kicks back in.

Timing retard wouldn't do that much.

If that's the case it could be something completely different. Something as crazy as an oil leak ;)

What kind of oil leak would cause those symptoms?

Oil leaking into the combustion chamber. Or onto the spark plugs.

as far as knowing that it is only running on one half, it idles extremely rough and if I pull the drivers side pug wires it doesn't change and if I pull a pass side wire it dies.

nope, coil runs 1&2 and 3&4 in pairs, so if a coil died it would die in those pairs.

I vote the belt skipped ... you could also just have two really fouled plugs. Another mild posibility is a blown head gasket. But the most likely is that the best skiped.

I checked the timing and it is right on, I sprayed wd-40 around the intake gasket but it didn't change anything, that should work to figure out if the intake gasket is bad coorect?

did you put plugs in it yet? wasting all this time trying to figure it out when it could be just fouled plugs is pointless... spend the $6.00 o a set of plugs

when you checked theT- belt, did you check it correctly, you have to take the center pulley off, and check the crank gear mark, i assume you did this, or did you just check camsahft marks.
i vote still for T-belt skipped.

let us know how you checked the T-belt. ALL 3 marks have to be right, not just on the cam sprockets.

still only running on 2 cylinders

Post by chuck25 »

hi guys it's been awhile, i've had so much going on I haven't had time to look a my legacy until now, I forgot to mention that the problem is intermitent, some days it runs fine for 5 to 15 miles before its starts to act up. any fresh ideas, I am going to put another set of new plugs in this weekend, I had it down to a local shop and they hooked it up to the scanner and exhuasted all the avenues that they could think of and still don't know what' wrong.
Is anybody in here from anywhere close to Duluth Minnesota?
Thanks

can you get / borrow a automotive stethascope?
with the car at idle, place the probe over each and every injector (hold the tip of the probe over the injector hold down clamp piece) and you should hear a tapping fairly steady at each injector. if you don't hear the tapping as loudly at one particular injector, you should probably switch out that inector with another one.

once you start to narrow these things down, you will eventually find the problem.

Isn't there a timing mark on the crank pulley? It should line up at the zero degree mark on the plastic cover when the cams line up...shouldn't it? I always time from the crank gear but I am pretty sure you can do the same from the pulley for diagnosis. Can anyone verify/disproove this?

there is a timing mark on my crank pulley, cause i put it on there, for this particular reason, so i dont have to pull the front covers and pulley off and on to verify the timing. Maybe the marks are there from factory too, but they sure werent visible through all the rust on the pulley i have.

Your right...its VERY hard to find if the pulley is rusted. I had a hell of a time on my NA engine when I was checking it.

I'd agree. Change the plugs for the money...put OEM plugs in it.
