1993 Legacy

Post by playball »

Hey guys,

I have a 1993 Legacy, 230,000 miles. Recently there has been a significant loss of power (eJ22). It no longer holds 5th gear on even slight inclines, and it doesn't have quite the takeoff it once did(it never had much, so any loss is signigicant)

I have done the following:

1. Replaced plugs, wires and air filter (no difference)
2. Ran Injector cleaner through it (no difference)
3. Changed ECM (no difference)
4. Replaced O2 sensor...........

After replacing the sensor, it ran great for about a week. Then back to the Same old Stuff. I took the O2 sensor back and exchanged it, but to no avail. Still running poorly.

Okay, it just doesn't feel as though the timing is advancing or retarding as needed under load. It idles fine, I have no CEL, but it just isn't running as it should, as I have lost 2-4 MPG as well.

Is there an easy way to check timing? Should I just take my $700 junker to the shop and let them check it. I'm much more inclined to do it myself if capable. If it slightly out of time, will it run?

If you have any other suggestions, my ears are open.

JD

Fuel filter? They are supposed to be changed every 30k.

I don't see how the timing could be off.

Hmmmm. Ran good with new O2 sensor for a week? wierd.
Mine has 185k with the O2 sensor it had at 76k when I bought it. I still get 29.5 mpg on the highway.

I'm sorry, fuel filter was changed with plug/plug wires/ air filter.

Forgot to list.

I am going to take it for a compression test. What the hell.

For timing, you can take off the timing covers and turn the crank pulley clockwise. If all the timing marks line up, then its good.
