AWD does not work
i have a 1990 Legacy LS (290k miles) 4EAT , ever since i have had my car it has had no AWD, its dificult in the winter because it gets stuck very easily and even moving in the yard is hard. the other day i was going to do a hard take off (not somthing i normaly do) to see if the tanny slipped or had any problems shifting, not meaning to spin the tires it actualy set for 5 seconds and spun before it took off, then it took forever to get into 3rd gear, that wasnt even WOT.
ive been reading some older threads in here and found one sorta the same, they said it was a burnt out clutch pack. i think thats whats wrong with mine.
do i just need a new transmission or can i get it rebuilt?

You need a rebuilt transmission, your current transmission rebuilt, or to do a swap. Cost varies, and it's probably more than your car is worth in a financial sense. You could find a lower mileage, newer, 5MT for less than the price of even a cheap rebuild.

what about s JDM transmission? there are some on ebay starting at $275, used of course. how long do the 4EAT usualy last? i dont know how to drive a manual, i geuss i need to learn but i dont feel comfortable doing such a big modifacation as AT to MT.
i would buy another car but its still a great daily driver and i like it to much to get rid of it.

It'd probably have to be a pre-93 transmission, and that might be hard to discern. The early 4EATs could do around 100k before most of them started having problems with clutches, bands and solenoids. Also, a newer model uses a different TCU, and won't work properly with yours. It's not going to be worth looking for a used transmission, because those probably have issues as well.
I still say the two options are to pay for a rebuild or look for a 5MT car at this point.

The JDM 4EAT transmissions have a separate issue because the wiring can be different, and pins don't align properly, and while the transmission may be fine, the wiring/controls are mixed up....so the transmission doesn't work properly.

i know this question should go to intake but i thought id go ahead and ask:
-do you think taking out the snorkus is worth it? ive heard you loose some low end tourqe, is it to much that it takes away from any gains youll get? will you get any gain? or does it just sound cool

If your tranny is fubarred, then you should go for whatever gives you less torque, save what is left of the tranny.Murphy wrote:ohhh.. i

now this question may sound stupid or something, but dont worry its just something i was thinking about, nothing i would ever try because i would probably just screw up my car, but say i got a new one and wanted to use this one to rally
i dont know what the clutch pack n all looks like because ive never seen a diaghram of it or anything, but since the clutch pake no longer works, what if you completely took it out and fabbed a steel rod that when straight to the rear driveshaft so that its always engaged
can you realy open up the tranny to get it out anyway?
