External wastegate
Ive read a ton of articles on them, and searched the forums a bunch, and I still dont get where they're installed.
I know a few people on the board have them, care to post some pics and tell me a little about your setup?

Re: External wastegate
On a subaru they generally come off the uppipe. Here is an example made by ultimate racing. The uppipe is black and the dump tube is raw stainless. Exhaust gas goes into the wastegate from the uppipe and out the dump tube once pressure to the wastegate actuator has overcome the spring pressure. The dump tube follows the path of the downpipe. Some external setups route the dump tube back into the downpipe to keep it quiet.Splinter wrote:Ive read a ton of articles on them, and searched the forums a bunch, and I still dont get where they're installed.

That setup is made for a wrx/sti. It is not necessary for 99.9% of legacy turbo setups and probably 95% of the wrx's and sti's out there. Some instances where it's worth it would be:
You're running a turbo that doesn't have an internal wastegate.
To remedy boost creep that can't be otherwise controlled.
To hold higher boost levels than are possible on your internal wastegate.

Pretty much what Mike said. External gates aren't necessary for a lot of people.
I'll be using a custom TurboXS external gate pipe when I go bigger.
When you go rotated mount, an external gate tends to make things easier.
A friend of mine has a 20G on his 1st Gen Eclipse and has a 38mm Tial gate welded into the turbine housing. Pretty cool.

you gotta host them somewhere, then just link to them or use the [img] tag.brando wrote:I have an external wastegate on my turbo legacy. I'm kind of retared on how to post pictures though.
or just email them to me and I'll post em up

I was going to say, that Holset setup should already be able to handle the power levels you're looking for, Nick.555BCTurbo wrote:I might have to go the external gate route when I get the Holset conversion done on my SS...although I figure that the Holset wastegate will work for 25 or so psi...

now keep in mind that holset wastegates are intended for diesels, which dont have the exhaust energy of gas engines. also, the HX35 has a convoluted wastegate setup where the wastegate port is only in one runner of the turbine, which causes boost creep.
so, external may be the way to go.
nick, what holset did you have in mind? HY35 or HX35? an HX35 with a properly designed twin scroll split header would be sweet.
gotta love the fact that holsets make full boost below 4000 in higher gears too...
I'm thinking of going with a holset but I dont know if it is such a good idea with the bottom end I will run, 350BHP is my goal.
sammy, is that an audi 5000t wastegate? those are a very good unit. 600hp capable, durable, cheap. but I'm sure you knew that.
what did you do for flanges?

yup, off an old 5KTQ, I cut some flanges from some mild steel plate stock with my torch. I think is like a 34mm unit. One off a 20v is bigger but this should be plenty for my needs. Spring is a little soft but that's easily fixed though.206er wrote:sammy, is that an audi 5000t wastegate? those are a very good unit. 600hp capable, durable, cheap. but I'm sure you knew that.
