Flashing seat belt light

Post by georryan »

Hey, the other day on my drive home I noticed that my seat belt light didn't go out. Instead, it was flashing on and off. I unplugged the passenger belt and it beeped like it was sappose to, but when I unplugged my driver side auto belt it didn't do anything. No noise, and the light kept flashing. It still works fine; when I open the door it slides to the otherside to let me out. Has anyone else had this problem? What was it? Is it some sensor?

Were is the number 22 fuse?? It isn't under my hood, is it under the stearing column? Those aren't numbered on my car, and nothing is labeled as seat belts.

Some may know, but for others,

Two very great resources I've put together

All the scans I have done from my manuals.

Also, The entire 1990 owner's manual scanned, and there's three options, a condensed pdf version, zipped pdf, and individual images for each page.

Laurel and ciper, I don't get it... How do you get your neck in the path of the seat belt during an oil change?

You start the car real quick or to let the oil cycle through the filter, and open the door as you are leaning forward. Or you open the door just after you've pulled the hood release, yeah I've had similar situations happen to me. :)

Ok, a question on that fuse again. According to the manual the number 22 fuse is under the hood marked as sub fan. Well I pulled that with the ignition off as it says, I've even run the car with it out and it didn't fix or even kill my flashing seat belt signal.

It isn't even really giving a real signal, it is just doing quick flashes, no long flashes. So in essence it is like 1 repeatedly or 9 or any other single digit number, because it doesn't pause to signal a break.

Now Josh, you mentioned that it was behind the kick panel under the steering column. I Looked in that fuse box and don't see anything marked as a seat belts, also there is no numbers on those. Is there a second fuse box on the driver's side? I haven't found any record of one. Sorry guys for the constant questions, I just can't figure out how to clear this thing. I've been going over the paper work which states to clear the memory by pulling the number 22 fuse with the ignition off. That hasn't worked though, so I'm wondering it is a different fuse.

Or with the door closed you stick your head in to turn the key and when you do the seatbelt goes back and wraps around your neck

Ive done that so many times, you'd think I would have learned by now!

If you turn the key to the on position without starting it, say to turn the radio on while working it will get you too!

my bad, it is the fuse box in the engine bay.

As to why when you pull that fuse the light still blinks, I'm not sure.

Either the manual is incorrect in telling you what fuse to pull, or something is not right.

I would suggest pulling the codes from the auto seat belt connector. There is a little connector under the dash somewhere. Unfortunately I have had no luck in locating it. However I haven't searched super hard for it.

Whahoo! fixed the stinking blinking light. I found out that you actually have to connect the two connectors so that you can read the error, only then can you clear the memory. The connector is hard to find and it was black on my car, just over the accelorator pedal for anyone who ever gets that problem again. It's nice not to have that thing blinking anymore.

Yeah, find that black connector, and follow the wires back. Wrapped up in electrical tape, you'll find the other connector looped back through the tape. When I first saw it I was like "crap, I pulled it out of the back of a connector!" It looked like it belonged somewere else. That was it, though. You shouldn't have much problems now. :)

Here's the pictures. Sorry they are large. I haven't quite figured out my friend's digital camera yet. :)

http://cs.wwc.edu/~georry/Wire1.JPG

Although it doesn't look like it, the little connector and the bigger connector both go to the same wiring group, if that makes sense.

In the first photo, the bigger black connector can be seen just above the blue connections. The red and white wires going to it are just above the blue connector.
