What would you do?

Post by Imprezive »

Ok, so I bought this 1991 legacy turbo (with ej20g swap) from my sister back around november, and I got it running and have been driving it since about mid-march. Ever since then I have had nothing but problems with it, I've have to fix a bunch of stuff, and it still wont even pass smog. Just recently the turbo went out and I finished putting in my spare vf11and wrx intercooler today. Only to see that my brand new o2 sensor is dead, the car wont rev past 2200rpm and there is a weird noise coming from the turbo area.

This is my first car, I am 16 and have a fulltime job. It was my daily driver but now its just sitting in my driveway. I really am getting frustrated with it, and I just want something reliable that has some potential. I don't know whether to stick it out and keep trying to make this thing run right or part it out and find another car. (I still owe over $2000 on it still)

So what the F do you guys think I should do, I mean the car has a lot of potential what with the EJ20G engine, but I need a car and I have nothing to drive...

To be realistic and honest......for the situation you're in, age and what not. I'd recommend trying to sell it for what you owe....may be a pipe dream.....and get something that is reliable.

The first gen legacies are very reliabel cars. Even the turbo cars, but more so the n/a cars.

However, they are definitely getting up there in age, and any car, regardless of how good it is requires maintenance to keep things going. I don't know how much you want to work on your daily driver, or what your mechanical apptitude is....but all those things factor into a decision.

My car is in good condition, but it seems like I'm continually battling little stupid shit....like the fuel sender and front diff seal dripping. It's just an older car, and is going to require more maintenance.

Are you planning to go to college? If so, get something inexpensive, reliable, and economical that will last through college with minimal repairs/work, and is cheap to operate (good mpg).

Once you're done....then get something that is more fun.

Or....if you're dead set on keeping it....get a second beater to drive on a daily basis. That way you can work on this one in your spare time, and when it pisses you off....just leave it and come back to it later.

After owning two vehicles, I will ALWAYS have some form of a spare vehicle.

Please don't part out a perfectly good 1991 SS...

Someone would buy it in one piece, I am sure of that :D

I second having more than one vehicle. It's saved me so much headache and stress that I can't even begin to express.

The only time my '94 SS was down was when the timing belt tensioner went, and since it was at the end of a weekend it sat at my friend's garage for a week before we were able to fix it. Having the second SS was invaluable at that point.

And that's not to mention what would happen if my main / only vehicle was NOT a Subaru.... my Toyota's timing chain jumped a few teeth and requires lots of dissassembly to get at, and it might have bent some valves as well... it's been down for 2 weeks as I have had zero time to attend to it.

My Bronco was also screwed up for a few days, and thanks to multiple vehicles I was able to continue my daily business and run to the parts store and repair it in my own time.

I'd say go find a N/A Legacy for a couple hundred bucks and you'll find that you don't mind working on your SS at all. The stress all comes from it being your only vehicle....

lt is much more stressful to have your only form of transport die than it is to have one of your Vehicles undrivable

plus its a ej20 powered ss which is cool id say try and find yourself some na subaru that needs a timing belt or new seals or something so you can pick it up for cheap. Before my Turbo wagon i had 4 different NA legacys and i never paid more than 500 to have a fully reliable running one.

save the ss and as you get money slowy start fixing her.

though if you part her i call the heads and mani lol j/k.......

but seriously

<---- needs heads and mani :)

haha, well I think I'm gonna keep her, I just can't let her go. I've renewed my confidence, and have realized just how cool this car will be if I can make it all work. And thanks for the advice, I will whole heartedly consider a beater/daily driver even though there isnt much room at my house...

gt2.5turbo, what kinda heads/mani do you need?? my brother in law might have what you need.
