Hi everybody, this is my first post here and I hope I will enjoy been in this forum, and I can be part of it.
I am getting my 95 Legacy Brighton wagon to the shop in the new york area and I get a quote of $680 to replace the timing belt, tensioneer kit a water pump.
Do you think this is a good quote or is it a liitle bit too high?
I will appreciate you answer a lot.

Around here that's really high. Parts prices from subaruparts.com would run you about $225 and figure even two hours labor (which is a little generous) and you're down under $450. Granted, local dealer parts are more so factor another $150 for that. It's an easy job and if you're replacing the tensioner they come new already pinned so you don't even need to compress the sucker.

How many miles on the car? I'd recommend replacing the oil seals while you're in there.
2 hours is a little tight IMO. Sure it can be done in 2 hours, but they'll probably go with whatever the book time is for the t-belt job.
However, that price is a little high IMO....but it may not be for NYC

Don't know what the book is, but I've had it done (minus the tensioner - $78 @ subaruparts.com, $145 local dealer - no extra labor) for $250. Even factoring in typical $90-$100 shop labor rates vs. my mechanic's $60 that's still really high.

The thing is that I won the car on ebay for $450 and I am getting the vibe that the seller is trying to overcharge me on the repair because is not satisfied with the final bid, Last Year I had another Mechanic here in South carolina who replace the seals and the timing belt for $280 and now I get this $700 quote and I am not enjoying it.
The car has 139k miles and it is unusually rusty in some places that I've never seen before.
Any way,
I guess I will call some local dealer near NYC and have more info to make a conclusion about the seller's intentions.
