ok this is my first subaru build. and i have spent hours reading posts (im so confused and my head hurts) heres the deal I WANT A BAD ASS SUBARU i currently have a n/a ej22 in the car w/ garrett t4, stand alone ecu, fmic, 350cc injectors. the car runs good@ 12lbs boost. but i want alot more! i purchased an ej22t and just tore it down. i have ordered eagle rods (thats the only thing i know for sure i want) there is all kinds of talk about heads (thats what made my head hurt ej20g,ej25,sohc,dohc) as far as the heads go i dont want the oil/coolant returns as i will just have to block them anyway,i have alot of work into my intake manifold so i dont really want to change it (but i am willing to) im not willing to build new headers so the exhaust must line up. other than that im all yours! what ever you guys tell me to do i will do (not willing to commit a felony or any sexual favors ) and if anyone wants to sell me the things i need, dont be bashful. im very serious about this, im just not willing to spend the next 6 months learning "the way to go"
thx mark
p.s 110 octane not a problem
well it's too bad you wasted money on rods, I've never heard of a rod letting go in an EJ22T - and we've all heard of them holding 20-25psi all day long on stock internals.
Pistons are the weak point - but from what I've heard over the years, they only get to be the weak point when you cross beyond 300hp; then ringlands begin to fail.
This will always be under debate: the stock EJ22T head can be ported and polished to flow just as good as any other head, don't let others tell you otherwise.
If you dont care about oil feed and returns I would go with Ej25 heads either dohc or sohc. The flow great without any work, and dont have those feeds.
f you go with EJ25 heads you will need to change your intake manifold. The exhaust will bolt up, but the intake ports are much bigger. Unless you plan on doing some custom cam timing adjustments, I'd run the SOHC heads. Less to move, they flow great and are pretty readily available. I'm building an engine with them right now. so far my only issue is the IAC, which is totaly different and incompatable with only style solenoid valves (new ones are stepper motors) Since you have a stand alone, that should be an easier fix for you though.
What are you running for management, and what are you running for an IC? 12psi on the NA is got to be pretty nasty, how's detonation holding off, you eat a ringland yet? I did, twice with that kinda setup. Pics?

so sohc heads. are any better than others? what exactly am i looking for here? the ecu is a ems stinger (dont know anything about tuning, but know someone who does) as far as the 12lbs goes. my last motor was set at 18lbs and it took it just fine. i really think its a combination of tuning and race gas
thanks for the comments

well haha, i got a deal for you...... and some advice to boot.....
well i have a set of ej22t heads and intake manifold that are completly ported and polished, also gasket matched. with new valve seals cam seals. they have 80 miles on them. and i would be willing to part with them for a decent price.
second the stock subaru rods are awesome. i still have yet to see one in a turbo toss one out the side, subaru bottom ends are nearly bullet proof. nearly.
the pistons on the other hand, well at least the ones out of the ej22t's are pretty awesome. i have heard that they are good till about 400 hp. i guess its all on preference. if you could i would cancel the order on the rods.
well message me if you are interested in the heads.they are just chilln in my garage. looking for a new home. i also have a lot of other turbo stuff if ya need them or want them.

binford youare correcto. but can you justify spending the money on those rods for nearly no noticable performance? i cant. and prolly wouldnt notice the difference witha boost motor. the eagle rods are great. i dig them. and i would use them if i had money to waste, but i dont cause im cheep lol

The price for Eagle rods is not that steep if you are already getting forged pistons, engine work, and a seal kit. I've said it before. If you are gonna spend over a grand on pistons and freshening the motor(with Wiseco's you have to bore the block), shell out the $300 for the Eagle rods.
So what standalone are you running? I'm trying to get feedback on the different systems out there since I'll be in the market in a couple months.
If the price is right, you could get those heads from thehookup, throw in some Delta cams, and doo pretty well. Or get some SOCH heads and call her good. Its up to you.
I think the EJ25 heads are a FAR better option. They are clearly a superior design, the intake is better too, plus you get top feed injectors depending on what year/model you grabbed the heads from. I did a mild port on mine (mostly just bowl blending and took out a bunch for port matching. Well worth it, even though I don't plan to flowbench these heads, there's no doubt that they flow deasticaly better than EJ22 heads, even ones with days of port work into them.

So far nobody has asked the first important question... How do you plan to use the car/engine? Street/AutoX where you need good bottom end pull? High speed/track with top end power? Do you need every day drivability or can you sacrifice that for ultimate power? There is no one best engine set up, figure out what you need it to do build to suit.
Like others have said, stock crank and rods are good (better rods are fine too), forged pistions would be a VERY good idea. On heads, again it depends what you want to do, consider the RPM range, in general bigger ports/valves will flow better on the top end but wont mix the fuel as well at lower flows and may leave a hole in the bottom end. Low compression/high boost gives better top end, higher compression/lower boost will give a flatter torque curve with better pull on the bottom. Are you willing to install a custom geared trans or lower diff gears to move the power band down to a useable speed range? One note I will give, choose your heads first so you can have the dish in your forged pistons sized for the compression ratio you want.
Sorry for more questions than answers.

No matter how broke I am... I always seem to find two cents.
well i found nasioc. that is a fast moving bord! they have plenty for sale but i dont know what im looking for,but think i have an idea. sounds like sohc heads would be the easiest to swap and some say they flow better than dohc and some say the opposite. so im going w/ sohc. now what the heck is it im after? are they all the same 2.o, 2.5 phase 1, phase 2, wrx, is there a certain motor they come from?
now to explain a little bit. this motor isnt for racing but for play. its in a sand rail. i didnt state that earlier cause i figured nobody would bother answering any questions. you guys may feel the same about my hobby as i do about yours (that is to say, have no interrest or knowledge) hell im not sure what a imprezza or forrester or wrx even looks like. i do know this ive had a few subaru buggies and for the weight they get my vote every time! i could choose whatever motor i want and i choose SUBARU! so please help me out here. i need to be spoken to like someone that doesnt know anything (cause i dont)
all_talk in general i will sacrifice all driving "nicities" for ultimate hp
thx mark
those are good heads to use but I am not sure if that manifold will allow WRX top feeds... anyone know? or are there other top feeds that will fit an 01 mani like from nissan or something?
