under intake manifold turbo inlet pipe

Post by not8player »

Has anyone with DOHC heads and DOHC intake manifold on a legacy ej22t setup attempted to run the turbo inlet pipe under the intake manifold (same turbo intake inlet setup as the WRX)?

I know that the power steering pump would need to be swap to a later model impreza or the fluid reservoir relocated somehow.

Does anyone think this is worthwhile to do?
Beside making aftermarket turbo upgrade selection easier, and eliminating the short and sharp double 90 degree turns on the stock legacy setup, any other benefits?

well they still 90 degree bend... and get pinched in a few places but ya overall i imagine it is less constrictive and prob flows more air. probably why subaru switched to the undermani design. You would need a different powersteering pump but with the number of wreaked wrx's and part outs everywhere you could easly pick one up. If im able to find the right set of heads then ill be running this setup just not looking forward to shelling out the money for the aftermarket inlet piping they are like 200+ new!

but yeah it will definitly open up your options as there is a huge market for wrx's and STi's so if you can do it i say go for it 8)

Yeah the prices are just way out of whack!!

I was thinking along the lines of starting with a ~2 1/2" Aluminum (maybe steel) Mandrel J-bend and adding the necessary nipples and trimming it to fit.

The oldschool brat/gl reservoir fits, apparently.

We did this but didn't take pictures :(
I'll try and get some next time the customer is back in town with the car.

I used an Audi 5000t or 200t intercooler pipe under the manifold and moved the stock PS tank with the WRX tank and WRX adapter on our pump.
I had to bend the hi pressure PS line a bit and we didn't have ABS on this car so that gave lots of room for the air meter & filter
Switched the small hard lines under manifold to silicon.

Which turbo did you use in the setup?
