Got a Forester Tranny, now have some q's

Post by livestrong14 »

Hey all,

I will be getting a 2004 forester xt tranny and rear diff. next week. It will come with the 4.44 rear diff. and driveshaft. I will have this mounted up to my 2.2 T shortblock with 20G heads, and sti vf-34 turbo. What can I expect with this setup in terms of 0-60? The higher the gearing, the quicker the car is off the line right? The lower gearing like 3.90 is meant for higher top speed?

Thanks guys.

Yes but you'll have an extra shift to get to 60 than you would in a 3.9, so depending on how fast you shift, you might end up with a slower 0-60

You might need different front axles with that, too. In fact, you might want to check on the rear ones while you are at it.

Will do. Has anybody else attempted something like this? Or will I be a revolutionary?

The 04 XT should have stubs in the trans, so your axles should work.

You'll be in 3rd gear getting to 60. Remember, the trans was geared to be used with the Forester wheels and tires.

The higher gearing means off the line faster, but it also means less load is built and increases turbo lag. This is why I don't like the 4.11 or 4.44 final drive ratios in turbo Subaru's, espically with larger turbos. When I was RWD, my effective final drive was 4.29:1. There was a noticeable spool difference between the 4.29 and the 3.90 I went back to.

I had a WRX trans in my car, so you arent THAT revoloutionary, but still different.

One thing, you'll need a tap so you can tap the lower starter bolt hole. We have a stud and use a nut, the WRX has a long-bolt that bolts to the engine. You'll need to thread this and insert a bolt or a stud.

I ran my car without a lower starter bolt for 1 week, and it did OK, but I would NEVER trust it. I also didn't drive my car but a few hundred miles in RWD mode.
