Subaru Love

Post by Subaru_Nation555 »

Since my car is in the shop for the next couple of days I am definitely having some withdrawal and I got to thinking. As much as it pisses me off sometimes and as moody as it can be, I absolutely love my car. There is just something about BC/BFs that are so cool. I think that the more time passes and more miles roll on the more I love it. Not being able to drive the car for a bit makes getting it back even sweeter. I am also very fortunate that I am able to drive a Legacy Turbo, especially at my age. It's also great that there is a whole forum for people who feel the same way. Just thought I'd throw that out there. :-)

i know how you feel. When i first bought my legturbo it didnt have reverse and when you need to park on campus reverse helps a lot so i was without her for 4 months or so while saving for a 5mt swap. There where some weekends that i had to drive thw 100 miles home and bring it up for a weekend just to give it some love :)

It's the reason why I insist on keeping my Legacy, even with all the BS I've been through with it. I just know that if I get rid of it, I'll regret it.

There's just something about all Subarus to me, not just BC/BF's... Well, except the Edsel ones....

yes, there certainly is. Maybe it's the AWD, maybe it's the boxer engine.

But whatever it is, I love it! And I hope my next car is a subaru. But that's only after I put 300k on this one

No, there's something beyond that. I seriously can't put my finger on it.

I've always had a "crush" on Subarus since I was a kid. By that I mean, sure I liked Ferraris and Vipers and all those exotic cars, but for some reason, Subarus caught my attention, almost like it was sinful. They were 'different' somehow.

well, I think the favorite thing I had as a passenger way back before I could drive was how fun it was just sitting in the passenger seat.
One of my favorite things about my car though, is steering feel, and how solid and precise the car feels. I've driven quite a few cars, FWD, RWD, AWD, and none have felt like my car. Haven't driven any other subies though, so I can't compare that way.

but yeah, there's something else there too, it's kinda mystical :)

I got sucked into Subarus when my buddy sold me his 93 4eat tleg. I was 18 and it was my first car. He had lots of problems with it and was sick of dealing with it. I bought it for $1200 and we worked on it until we figured out what he did wrong when he installed a boost guage. (Don't ever blow into the vacuum lines near the auxillary purge control valve or you'll be sorry.) Anyways, after sitting for 2 months I finally got rolling and I never looked back. I absolutely loved the car but I beat the living crap out of it and finally retired it when too many things went bad. :smt089 Last June I saw a Tleg 5mt on autotrader.com with low miles (102k) and flew to Los Angeles two weeks later. I'm back in turbo heaven, and I have a parts car! :smt043

I've driven no practical car as fun as my Subarus. And the engineering is really among the best in the world for durability and serviceability, yet cost cutting is minimal, the latter of which is a lot more than I can say for plenty of exotics.

I remember 2 subaru experiences from when I was little.

The very first, the blizzard of 1993, I was 8 years old. My dad had a PIMP Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. Incredibly clean, cherry red exterior, cherry red interior, one of my fondest childhood memories was riding in that thing. Anyway, my mom had a 1992 Touring Wagon, Silver. It snowed, my dad had to go to work. The caddy was awesome, except in the snow. Got a little stuck. My mom pulled him out with the Subaru. Roads not really been plowed, and about a foot of powder on the ground. Pulled the caddy out.

2. Earlier in 1993, I was going to my soccer game. We were in the Subaru. I was in the back behind my mom who was driving. We had just dropped my sister off at her soccer game.

We were going through a green light, when a woman in a 1989 or 1990 Maxima ran a redlight and t-boned us square at the B-pillar. It was a rough accident. She was probably going 35mph or so.

The accident happened right in front of the Fire Academy, so 35 probies ran out in 3 trucks and 2 ambulances. The woman in the Maxima was taken away on a stretcher in a neck brace and, as my mom told me, was unconcious and had a broken nose. My mom opened her door and got out of the car, and then opened my door to make sure I was OK. I was shaken up but no worse for wear. EMT's got to us and checked us out. Said we were good to go, and my dad came from home to pick us up. We ate lunch at the burger king while they towed our car away. My mom had some peice of shit rental, and when she got the TW back, I was so excited. I was really sad the day we sold it. The car never drove straight after the accident, and the body shop didn't do THAT great a job, and you could tell it had been hit. She replaced it with a blue merkur XR4ti.

I've loved them since. My dad found my 94 on E-bay. 5-speed, and they listed the color as green. We bid on it and drove the 9 hours to Conn. to pick it up, sight unseen. When we saw it sitting there, I saw a little tear well up in my moms eye as she told me it was perfect. My dad drove it back home behind us, and it was a great day. I'll never forget that day.

Thinking about this makes me wish my car was stock again.

I have so many great subaru memories, but my most recent(definitely most vivid) took place just over a year ago, when I got my car back after 2 months in the body shop.

I had been driving my dad's 88 C3500 extended cab, long bed, with a canopy that you couldn't see out of. The mirrors were unadjustable, and the radio didn't work properly. The interior was a little moldy and the defrost didnt work. I drove the 2wd pickup all through the icy snowy part of the year, and the weekend after it stopped snowing, I got the car back.

I drove the truck to a safeway a few blocks away from the body shop and walked to go pick Hana up. I got in, and almost cried. She was so beautiful, clean, soft, and her seats cuddled me as I sat down. I turned the key in the ignition and the engine roared to life and settled down into a soft purr after 2 months of not moving. The automatic seatbelt came up and seemed to hug me as the radio read the mp3 disc that had just been inserted and began to play. I just sat in it for a while, dumbstruck by how lucky I was to have such a nice car. It was then that I really fell in love with my car.

I found an '88 xt6 for $500 in a classified paper that was about 3 hours away....

needed a "first car" so I jumped on google and found xt6.net.

I called the guy immediately after browsing xt6.net all night ;)

drove down that weekend and picked up the car with almost no information about it

haven't looked back since!!! (I like my xt6's a lot better than the wagon though.. wish I could find a cheap SS or turbo wagon for my legacy fix)
yo mang, can I get a rootshell?

Wish I had some cool memories like that. After my experiences with turbocharging my 99 Saturn, I wanted something that was turbocharged from the factory. I also wanted some all-wheel drive action; nobody in my family ever had a Subaru. Finally found a local listing for a '94 Legacy SS and paid $3800 for it. Best decision I ever made.

I need multiple Subarus for my various project vehicles; but Whitey will always be my favorite.

I've been drawn to Subarus since driving my Dad's '88 GL wagon. I was too small to reach the pedals but it was still fun to turn the wheel and work the signal.
And in this century I've been won over by my Legacy's practicality and how fun it is in rain/snow/gravel.

My SS was the first SS I ever rode in...kind of an interesting situation...

At the time, the car still belonged to Todd (-K-), and he was still in Iraq, so his youngest brother (and my fraternity brother) Glen drove it to visit us in Klamath Falls. He gave me a ride back to my dorm in it and I was sold. I then decided I needed a Turbo Legacy, and Todd bought his 93 when he got back, so I bought the 92...I don't think I will ever sell the car...it has gotten under my skin. I have put 12,000 miles on it since I bought it on April 15th, 2005...and it has dealt with it like a trooper (not the Isuzu kind...yuck)

I figured that the Legacy, although being a Japanese car, would suit me well as I am a boxer addict. I have been playing with Air cooled VWs and Porsches for quite a while. :D

First SS I rode in was the infamous BoostJunkie's. I was hooked on making power at that point. Then I rode in Matt's (Legacy92EJ22t) and I knew that I'd be following him for a while.

The first SS I've ever ridden in was my friend renmaxi's. 91 turbo 5spd. I still want that car, extremely bad.

The first one I've driven was just recently, free5ty1e came by my dealer the other day. He ordered some parts and we found a boost leak he had.

Your car is awesome Chris. Love the IC setup man!

Thanks Mike - it sure is a lot more fun with all the pressure staying inside the pipes. I guess we found the one place I didn't secure the coupler with a screw

Hey, when you engineer these things in a friend's driveway....

All this heart to heart about subarus is making my feel all warm and fuzzy.

My interest in subarus/ rally in general was first peeked by Matt#1 and his old yellow volvo. A few years back crazy him and I spent crazy weekands running around the north end of seattle participating Alley Rally, and other equally dangerous/ stupid activities. A few years later but none the wiser I test drove my first legacy in a foot of snow outside my house and well there was no looking back[/img]

Our family's first Subaru was back in 1989 when my dad got an 86 GL. He kind of went against the grind because the predominant members of my family only drive American made cars. He wanted the GL because it had switch 4WD and he wanted a car that could guarantee him being able to drive around when it snowed (it can snow a lot in PA).

I do remember one distinct memory with the GL: One year it snowed and it kind of melted then refroze overnight. Basically, the road next to my house, which is a slight hill, was covered with ice... a sheet of it. Many of the neighbors, who lived up the hill, couldn't make it up the hill due to the ice. My dad came home late that night, put the car in 4WD and went right up the hill. He went to try to back into the garage and the front end of the car swung around and pointed down hill. He was the only person to make it up that hill that night and he had no problems doing so.

In 1996, the GL turned 144k and it had a slight antifreeze leak. My dad decided that the car was just getting too old and needed replaced. So, he searched around and found the Legacy that I drive now. He paid around $5500 for it at the time. He wanted another AWD/4WD car to drive around in the PA snow. Since then, it's been through some fairly tough storms. It has gotten stuck no where and hasn't been in any incidents aside from my minor incursion with a guard rail (which resulted in a slightly bent fender and a cracked parking light).

I've decided that the next car I get will be a Subaru. I refuse to drive another FWD car; I hate them entirely too much. Plus, I really enjoy the boxer engines and the nice purr (and occasional rattle) that my car makes. I know it's not as fast as my buddy's VR6 Jetta, but I always remind him that I can kick his ass in rain, snow, and gravel.

My car just turned 150k and runs strong. I hope it goes for another 50k and more.
