ok so this is my car
93 subaru legacy wagon 2.2L
I brought the battle wagon into Midas today to check out whats wrong with my exhaust, 10 minutes later they bring back the keys and tell me the cat converter is cracked down the middle and needs to be replaced he says they dont have the subaru part for it so i would need to bring it down to the subaru dealership to get it done. He also told me to expect it to cost alot of money since its the part or type of cat converter that splits in two.
my question is, is it easy to replace something like this your self with a friend? or does this require alot to be done?
also if i get this done does anyone have an idea of the cost?
also im not sure exactly what part i need, any have an idea?
cat converter question for 93 legacy

it's easy enough to replace. New they are probably rediculously expensive. I don't know if you can buy used ones in your state (some States prohibit the sale of used catylitic converters) If you can, you might want to go that rought, or find someone who's parting a car out and get it used from them.

i would just go to a junkyard and pull the section of exhaust you need to replace the cat... probably be the simplest way. the hardest thing about exhaust work usually is dealing with the rust that acumulates over time but a nice big can of pb blaster usually will take care of that. id imagine it wouldnt be more than 30 bucks for a section of exhaust from a JY

the crappy thing is that the first cat is part of the header. So you kind of need to replace the whole thing.
I went to some exhaust place down the street the other day to get a new muffler put on, and it turned out the cat was all broken and clogged inside or something. He took one he had with two inlets and kind of hacked it in place. It seems to work fine and my car runs better, but once it gets warmed up the CEL comes on. The O2 sensor seemed to be working fine before, although I guess it's probably old anyway.
I'm thinking I'll probably just get a borla header or something and have the place make a whole new SS exhaust with a generic cat. That should get rid of all the rattles and leaks and rust.
