intake switch, white smoke..... blown head gasket!!?? HELP!!

Post by Project_Legacy »

i have a 91 legacy FWD AT that had an ebay intake on it. i switched that intake onto my 93 impreza, and used the ej18 intake on the ej22 just to move the car a few feet out of the driveway. it sounded really bad for some reason, like a moaning noise, but there was no smoke at this point.

i parked the car and let it sit. i went and bought an ej22 stock intake and put that back on. once i started up the car, i noticed that it started puffing huge amounts of white smoke out the tailpipe. we let it idle for a bit, revved it a bit, and it was just not going away. we did that for a whole 10-15 mins. if it was just water in the exhaust it would've cleared up by that time...

it sounds totally unrelated to the intake, but only when i switched the intake was when the smoke started happening. sounds like a blown head gasket? there isnt any water/oil mix yet, but i heard sometimes it doesnt even do that, if the gasket blew between where the water/cylinder would meet.

let me know what you guys think. other than the intake, NOTHING ELSE WAS TOUCHED! any help is appreciated. thanks!

There aren't many other places that coolant or water can get into the engine. I assume you're using the same throttle body with all of these intakes? Could it be leaking water through a bad seal or crack where the coolant passes through the throttle body?

ill check that out today. yea i find it hard to believe that it would be so all of a sudden like that. i was already taking off the intake mani, so ill check out the throttle body before i get too far. thanks!

anyone else have any other ideas that could have happened? the car never overheated either so... i have no idea how this happened.

What are you doing with the MAF sensors when you swap around all these intakes? Are you using the wrong MAFs on the wrong cars? Maybe that could make you run super rich or lean and cause smoke.

I don't see how you could do anything with the intake tract that would blow a headgasket.

Dunno what you're doing with the intake manifold, but you might want to slow down and understand what's happening before you tear more stuff apart and confuse yourself with more problems.

it isnt gasoline smoke, its coolant smoke for sure. i checked, and it wasnt the throttle body gasket. its clean of any water in the intake tract. that means its most likely in the combustion chamber.

i know, doing something to the intake wouldnt blow a headgasket. it is just what i did, and right after that it blew. it probably just needed the maintenance as i havent done anything to that car since i got it, besides routine oil changes/spark plugs and wires/valve covers. its due for a timing belt job and whatever else it needs.
