02 WRX engine into Legacy turbo? Anyone did it?
A friend of mine planning to sell his WRX engine to me since he will put a JDM STi engine.
My question is does anyone tried to put a USDM WRX engine into a 92 Legacy turbo and any problem will be happened if I keep using the stock ECU? He also has the WRX ECU but don't have the wire harness for our BC legacy.
Will that be very hard to put it into a Legacy turbo or it will be as easy as like swap a EJ20G engine?

The wrx has better flowing heads but, a weaker block.
To use the wrx heads or engine with your stock ecu, you will need to at least modify the cam gears.
It is Much easier to do a ej20g swap.

Will it be possiable to do the swap?
I know the EJ20G is the easier way but for the chance to get the WRX with the ECU, its hard to refuse to swap it!!!
Tell me how hard and impossiable to do it and make me reject my friend's offer, I know I am short on money but the engine is lovely to have on a BC Legacy turbo.

You will need both complete wiring harnesses out of their respective cars to do the swap. After dozens of hours unwrapping all the tape, swapping connectors, and splicing wires, you'll regret your decision to put an OBD II engine into your legacy.
Why in the world would you want to give up a beefy closed deck turbo motor (EJ22T, EJ20G) for something that wasn't designed to reliably support as much power (EJ205, WRX). Its pure blasphemy.

I just blow my EJ20G on the track day and now I don't have too much choice for the engine option, I could find a used EJ22t in local but the problem is noone knows how many KM on the engine and I am also don't wanna put in a ej20g since the price is higher then the ej22t.
My friend just has his USDM WRX and a twin turbo Legacy in his shop, for the easier swap I would like to choose the WRX!
Does anyone know that the Twin turbo block will fits with the EJ20G head?
Did anyone did it and hows it feel?
Thanks for all the help!

The twin turbo block is very nice. No proof, but I own one! Its sitting attached to a motor stand awaiting an owner.

The twin turbo longblock should work fine. Just use the EJ20g intake manifold, wiring and turbo setup.
Its give and take.... The TT block is open deck, but the heads are an improvment over the "g" heads.

Should I just take off the TT head and put the EJ20G head on it? which head gasket should I use and any other things I have to caution about!
I really want make my car alive, I did lots on the handling and I love this car more then other Subaru at this moment....

Ben,
To install the TT block into your car, just remove the exhaust manifolds and intake manifold from the TT block. Now you have a longblock sitting on your stand that is dimensionally identical to your Ej20G.
Take out your Ej20G, remove intake manifold and exhaust and install on TT longblock. Install in car.
Don't switch heads or any of that jazz. Just drop the longblock in the car as is...

Hay matt, thanks for your info. Have you done this before, if you did, how it feels?
I know the TT won't fits since the second turbo is blocking on the brake booster.
How can I use just one turbo from my EJ20G? Will it work if I only use one turbo?
Also, what should I swap from my ej20G?
As Downpipe will fits or not?
THanks for your help again!

The twin turbo block, at least if you have the one I have, uses the same sensors. Its pretty much plug and play. You will have to double check some wiring, but the cam sensor and the crank sensor are the same as our EJ22 wiring. You will have to plug some oil/water stuff on the driver side head. You will have to adapt a section of the fuel rails (compare and you will see).
SWAP OVER THE TWIN TURBO THROTTLE BODY!!!!!!!!!!! It is way way to small. Takes some work.

douglas, Thanks for your reply, I do have a TT block in the shop but some of the step I am not too clear if I do the swap.
How can I use the TT block become a single turbo?
What should I take off and what shold I put on from my EJ20G to the TT block?
Please help and hope the car alive soon.
Thanks again!

No, that's not what we are saying at all. We never told him to remove the heads. Why on earth would one do that??? He just wants to remove the intake manifold and exhaust manifold off of his Ej20G and use that on the new engine.corsair wrote:Ben, what everyone is saying is just take everything (heads, turbo, etc) off the twin turbo block and just use what remains. That would be the SHORT BLOCK, which is the block itself including the pistons and crank etc. Take that and swap it in for the EJ20G SHORT BLOCK in your car. Keep everything else from your EJ20G and just bolt it up to the twin turbo block. You'll be left with what was essentially your EJ20G but with a slightly weaker block.
BTW, the twin turbo isn't an EJ20-TT, that isn't the correct name. I believe it's EJ20H.
Ben,
The turbo ( or turbos) are directly related to the exhaust manifold. If you change to the single turbo exhaust manifold, then the single turbo bolts right up. I don't know how to make it any more clear than that.

As for the Drivers side head. Holes to plug.
The two banjo lines are easy to plug, its just a bolt. Use, the bolts that plug the oil galleys on the "g" heads.
As for the oil return, you can do it two ways. One, find someting to plug the line. There isnt too much pressure in it, but you dont want it to leak air.
OR, what I did. Pull the return line out of the head(its pressed in, may be hard to get out) Then, use a 3/8in Pipe thread tap, and tap the hole. The hole is pretty close to the right size already. 3/8NPT plugs are pretty easy to fine. I would use some teflon tape when you install it.
