For those of you who havent heard, Ive run into some pretty significant drivetrain problems, and I dont think Im going to be able to afford to repair it until the fall.
I just spotted a fairly decent XT in the paper for $500
Any reason I shouldnt go for this as a temp car until I can fix the T-Leg?

Hey, there's value in a pos. My FOXBOX cost me a whopping $300 and I've put probably that much plus a little more back into it. But for a standard, basic, exhaustless, speedo-less, non-air conditioned, non-power steering, 4 speed manual transmission, chick repelling pile of German crap, it gets me where I need to go just fine.

I dont think I could live without the sound of a spoolup
Im going out to check it out tomorrow night. Basically, I know for sure that the drivers side front CV joint is busted, the car is driveable but it needs to be fixed. Apart from that, Im gonna do a compression test, and if it checks out, Ill probably take it.

Its an 86, Turbo, 5MT, Dunno if its 4WD yet. I think all the turbos were?
Talking to the mechanics at the dealership I work at about what to look for. Basically the only real problem with these things are the headgaskets. Anyone know if you can get better aftermarket ones?

Nope, best head gaskets for the EA82T and OEM. The head gaskets are normally only an issue if you let it run hot/overheat (typical of any engine with aluminum heads). Number one reason for EA82s to run hot is a pluged/bad radiator.Splinter wrote: Anyone know if you can get better aftermarket ones?
Center of the EA Subaru universe is here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.net/forum/
Careful tho, the EA Subie are an addiction all there own, you'll be lusting after a EA81 dual range wagon, an XT6 or a RX sooner than you know.

There were 85-87 FWD turbos.
If it's turbo, check that the digidash is working correctly.
Headgaskets aren't the only issue. Frequently, if the engine overheats, the heads will crack, along with blowing the headgaskets. There are several generations of EA82T heads, each one less prone to cracking.
I have to agree with Manarius on this one, it's $500 for a reason.
Me, I wouldn't want it coz it's FWD
, but if it were 4WD, I'd buy it for $500 but be expecting to do a lot of work to it.
