Swap still won't run - UPDATE - SHE'S ALIVE!!!!

Post by realfinn »

The swap specs.

1993 subaru legacy SS Auto is the donor
1991 subaru legacy FWD 5sp NA is the recipient
Keeping the FWD Tranny
Put in the turbo fuel pump
Put in the turbo ECU
Did all the wiring for the CAM CRANK and Turbo related parts

Everything is in the car now and it doesn't wanna start.

-I have done a compression test and all the cylinders were at the same pressure (about 125 psi - seemed low at first but I lost concern when I saw all of the cylinders were the same).

-I have spark and the fuel pump seems to be pushing fuel to the injectors.

-Timing belt is where it should be.

Now what I have noticed is that when I first turned the engine over the engine fires a bit. Then nothing. I take the plugs out and dry them off and then put them back in and it will once again fire a bit and then nothing. Everytime I pull the plugs they're wet. I checked to see if the computer threw an error code. The only thing I can pull is a code 35 which is something to do with the purge solenoid. I can't believe this would keep the car from starting. But I began to think that there is a difference in the way the fuel lines are run for the AWD and FWD. The sending unit has 3 tubes at the tank for the AWD and only two for the FWD. I simply took the fuel pump and mounted it to my old FWD chasis. Not sure if I need the third line for anything (Two of the lines are hooked together in the 3 line version anyway).

The interesting thing was that if I pulled the plug from the sending unit and had an injector out and tried to turn the engine over it would fire on the cylinder with the missing injector (I found this out on accident - oops!). But it makes me wonder if I am just flooding out every time I turn the key. I have tried 3 sets of plugs now and they all seem to have the same effect on the engine. Fire a few times and then she acts like she's flooded.

I have tried known good cam and crank sensors just for the hell of it. No difference.

So I guess where I am at is thinking that I:
-Have all bad fuel injectors that are just blowing fuel by and flooding out.
-Have a dying ECU that is just firing fuel injectors sparatically.
-Have the fuel line issue with converting from 3 lines down to 2.
-Perhaps a dead MAF Sensor would keep the engine off but it doesn't seem like it would fire a few times and flood because of this.
-I noticed that even though the ECU schematic said that 90-92 cars have barometric pressure sensors my harness didn't have any wires going to it. Is this for auto trans only or am I missing something? Guess its not that important since I am putting in the 93 ss engine and ecu.

I hope someone out there can help me figure this out. The frustration is starting to kick in.

The fuel line issue is not an issue. The AWD tanks have two vent lines that go to a fuel separator, and then a line from that goes to the charcoal canister.

If you're talking about the lines on the fuel pump assembly, the other line is coming from the jet pump on the driver's side. If you just switched the pump from the tleg over to your fwd pump assembly, you should be fine.

Did this engine & ECU combo run recently before it was swapped?

Problem solved. I guess a bad fuel regulator and a leaking injector can make a big difference!!! BOOST!!!!!

Proud papa of a Legacy L FWD EJ22T - Now I have to go break the FWD tranny and buy a AWD donor!
