VSS on manual transmission -- replacement?

Post by thefultonhow »

Driving from Utah to Maryland, my speedometer dropped to 0 mph in the middle of South Dakota and stayed there. I took the dash and cluster off and the cable wasn't spinning on that end. I put it back on and separated the other end of the cable from the sensor on the transmission, spun the cable, and the odometer moved. So I know it's the sensor on the transmission.

My question is this. It looks like there's a nut that goes into the transmission, with the cable running through it. Can I just take this off and replace it with a new sensor, or do I need to take the whole transmission out/apart to get to the internal speedo gears?

I searched and all of the threads were on 4EAT cars, so is it any different on a 5MT?

Well, I pulled out the cable running through the nut (didn't know it came out separately  ) and sure enough, when I spun one end the other end didn't spin with it. I have a new one on order at the local Subaru dealer.
