New to forum - CA car Q's

I just purchased a 95 Legacy wagon which was originally sold in California so it has the CA emissions set up. Can anyone tell me the major differences between this and those sold in the rest of the US? I'm wondering if any performance or gas milage might be gained by converting to the non-CA set up.

My California 91 Legacy sedan gas mileage is still good. I STILL pass smog. If the mileage is good, why change it.

Performance, my husband can make it up the mountain faster than most with the A/C going. We aren't hauling anything though.

Well this may not be a fair comparison but here goes: My 95 Legacy wagon (5 speed) gets around 25 - 26 mpg for my mostly highway commute of 60 miles each way. This average is based on many trips and I'm usually going between 70 - 75 mph. The car has 146K miles and was well taken care of by the PO.

We also have A 2003 Forester (non-CA car) that recently turned in highway milage numbers between 28 - 30 mph at 75 mph and around 23 mpg for mostly city driving. This car has only 45K miles.

To my eye, the Legacy wagon should have less drag and it has a smaller displacement engine. I would think the milage should at least be comparable to the Forester. Is this an unrealistic expectation?

My legacy is AT sedan. I noticed this week when I calculated this month mpg, we jump up to 29 from 27 when we add the NEO fuel injector cleaner. Baker Precision doesn't have the product on the website, so I have to call to order it.

When my brother moved to WI from CA, his mechanic that installed his Toyota truck new engine said if you take the emission stuff off it may run with less power. It is misinformation that the vehicle will run better. The mechanic also works on dragsters (Tucson AZ).

Fuel/air mixture gets messed up and computer system compensates for the change. The car engine, computer etc, was built with the CA emission in mind. So he advises to leave the stuff on.

You need to see the 95 manual to see what the mileage is expected for your car.

my 1990 Legacy LS, with AT AWD (but only front wheels power it since AT is bad), it has 280k miles and it gets about 27mpg
the tranny also does not shift correctly so i would expect much better from a proper working one, maybe about 30mpg
theres not much of a city to do any real city driving so thats highway mileage
its a Kentucky Legacy btw, there are no emission laws around here (they aren't enforced anyway)

i think that they are 50 state certified, meaning they all meet the calif. standard.

i doubt if messing with the emission stuff whould have any value at all.
