hey everyone! ive been browsing the boards here for a few days in anticipation of my next purchase: a first-gen legacy wagon!

i am coming from a honda background, and im fed up with the ricer-filled world that is my car life. subarus seem pure and also less popular.

i would love your assisstance in choosing a car, since even though i have read through a couple of those "what to look for in a legacy" before you buy it threads, i feel like a little more knowledge never hurt anyone.

i am a bit confused by the sub-models of the legacy in this generation, so if someone could shed a bit of light on that it would be awesome. i know there are sedans and wagons, turbos and N/A's, autos (4EAT) and manuals (5MT) <see im learning stuff already!

i want to get a wagon, with a manual (i dont really want to do a auto-to-manual swap, unless its super easy and not all that expensive). i dont care about having boost, although that would be nice. but from what ive read, there were no boosted wagons with manuals? correct me if im wrong.

i really really want a sunroof, and im down to repair it if its leaky. leather and heated seats sound attractive, but i havent a clue as to whether or not these are options at all.

if someone knows the model variations pretty well, id love some information regarding which colors of cars came with what sort of interior (leather/cloth, black/grey/blue/tan/whatever). i really dont want a red car, and i love black interiors!

thanks so much for your help, and i expect to be spending alot more time here in the future.

oh, and for reference i am located in the seattle area. so rust is less of an issue, and it seems that these cars are fairly widely available.

thanks for the link, i was just browsing that site myself and i am much more knowledgeable now.

so its pretty rare to find a manual wagon with a sunroof?

Putting a manual tranny in a wagon with a turbo is a lot easier than putting a turbo & sunroof in a wagon without them

Honestly, you might be better off looking for a BG Legacy GT wagon. (96-99) They look cool, have all the options you want, are popular in 5 speeds, most have sunroofs and many have leather. Swaping in a turbo motor or adding a turbo to the motor isn't all that tough. Plus there's much more bolt on aftermarket stuff for them.

those wagons do seem like they might be a better bet, however im on a budget and i like having an older car (my honda is an '89).

plus, i think i may have found a BF that suites me: 1991 silver wagon with a 5spd and a sunroof. and its clean. and its less than $2000

You can always put a sunroof in, too. Mine was like $150, sized so that it doesn't bisect the lateral support across the B-pillars, and doesn't leak after 8 years.

After market sunroofs are crap IMHO. No slide shade, and look kinda hoaky.

well, i got one! a 91 ls wagon, with factory sunroof, awd, and 5 speed manual transmission.

im stoked!

Driving I-5 south into Seattle is always daunting.

Route signs should be posted like on ski runs.

Easy, intermediate, and double-diamonds.

canada has some sketchy ass roads too, try that one going out to euclulet and tofino in a TOTAL downpour.
