"Phase 2" 2.2 liter subie motor
Found an add for an Engine out of a second gen Legecy. Guy states his motor is "Phase 2", a term i have never heard.
Is there such a critter. if so what is the differance?
Will it fit in my early legacy without customization. (cutting and welding)?
realy like to swap out my water/oil user for a good motor.

Basically, they reshaped the crown? of the piston to gain an increase in compression. When they did this however, they got rid of the clearance between the valve and the cylinder head making the engine an interference engine. It'll fit in the car just fine, and it'll run just like the older ones do.

What year Legacy? This is an EJ22 we're discussing right? If it's a Phase II EJ22 out of a Legacy, it has to be a 99.
The piston crown reshape and switch to solid lifters happened in 97, which was still a Phase I engine. The switch to the rear-mounted thrust bearing was in 99, that's the Phase II engine.
Swapping it into your car will work mechanically, but the wiring and ECU stuff will get hairy, with your car being OBDI and this engine coming from an OBDII car.

After mid 97, they reshaped the crowns on the pistons to make more compression. Technically, all DOHC Subaru engines are valve-valve interference. If one cam on one of the heads turns independently of the other one, then the valves can collide. Yes, Hardy, I know, an EG33 from an SVX isn't really interference since one cam is gear-driven off the other

But, I'm pretty sure that all nonturbo Subaru engines from 97-up are piston-valve interference.

I always thought the EG33 was just an EJ22 with two more pistons.

Yeah, I was thinking of the SOHC engine. I remembered reading that as one of the reasons NOT to put DOHC heads on an SOHC engine, because it would change my nice reliable non-interference engine into an interference engine that had yet another thing that could go wrong. One other thing to note if you're looking at swapping in a 97+ EJ22, the exhaust doesn't work. EJ22 went to single port exhaast in 97, so you'd need teh front pipe to get it to match the heads.
