I pulled my EJ22t and now need help

Post by Subleg4 »

Like the title says I pulled my motor last weekend, the only thing wrong with it is a bad head gasket, but I figure I may as well upgrade from their.

I'm looking for 300awhp, Need to know some of the basic i'll need or some other peoples set-ups that are around the same hp im looking for.

Thanks, all advie is welcomed.

How much money do you have? Expect to spend some cash to get there.

What are people putting down with upgraded turbo/swap heads/ bigger injectors/ etc....?

Im trying to spend around $3000 would be ideal but,.... whatever it takes for it to be a little quicker than stock form

300awp is gonna be huge. new heads, big turbo, bigger injectors, 3" exhaust. stand alone engine management. and with that much power you are gonna need better brakes/suspension cause stock isnt gonna help much. doing my rebuilt, i have come to realize $3000 wont get you far. i wont have 300whp and here is what mine looks like:

Turbo(used)$425
Turbo back exhaust $1000
Hydra Engine management $1800
Injectors(used)+cleaning $300
Pistons $500
port and polish heads (dont know yet, kinda scared!)
Delta Cams $160
Exhasut manifolds(used)$125
Fuel Pump $90
ect

3000 didnt get me close at all and the little things start to add up. timing belts, valve seals.

on my build so far i'm using;

'92 ej22t bottom, w/new EVERYTHING pistons, rods, oil pump, water pump, seals, machining the block to .010 overbore. (had internal damage that i had to fix) $4300cad

'04 WRX top mount, TD04, fuel pump $350cad

'04 STI injectors $200usd

'98 DOHC heads, intake manifold, sensors $came with car

'92 legacy turbo crossmember (does apply to you but) $100cad

ARP headstuds $250cad

Cometic Headgaskets $150cad

Exedy Clutch (new in box, but used in price) $300cad

Greddy Emanage (used) w/boost sensor, injector harness, ignition harness $350cad

PLX M-300 wideband (used) $100cad

Omori boost Gauge (used) $75cad

Home Depot boost controler $25cad

Total.. without motor actually running yet.. $6000.00 aprox

still needing tuning cost, heads to be resurfaced, and various other parts around the engine bay and i'm prolly not going to be in the 300hp mark..

If you shop around, and only replace(upgrade) things that will actually give you more power, I think you could get pretty close to your goal for $3k.

So with better heads, bigger turbo, bigger injectors, intercooler and alittle Engine managment you should be able to do pretty good.

You guys should start building things yourself. Buying stuff sucks, and isn't nearly as cool. I dunno how much power I'll be able to take my engine too because of the pistons I'm running, but I've got enough everything else to make the 300whp number easy.

EJ25 SOHC heads - free, off a junk engine
port and pollish heads - free, just a few hours work
pollished valves - free, easy to do
5 angle valve job, deck heads, hone block - $400 (gonna talk to him about this, WAY to much, I wasn't at the shop when he droped it all off though)
Phase 2 EJ25 NA manifold port matched - free
giant front mount IC - $150
t3/t4 turbo - $250
WRX stainless header - $125 (ebay one)
stainless pipe to modify header - $20
Audi external wastegate - free
Toyota Supra turbo fuel pump - free
PP SMt6 - $450 (should have been half but rallitek screwed me)

I still need a few other odds and ends like a few couplers that I don't already have, but I'm under $1500 and I'll make at least 200whp confidently. If I went through the cost/hassle of having custom pistons made then I could easily make the 300whp number adding nothing else but injectors and tuning.

BTW, 300whp is WAY quicker than stock form, which is only in the 120whp range.
