UPDATE! Major hesitation on 91 Scooby Leg EJ22T

Post by redlineracer »

Well, one day I decided to fiddle with my car and mess it up as always. LOL I have a 1991 Subaru Legacy SS with auto tranny. The problem started when I thought it would be cool to put in a DSM sidemount intercooler as a top mount. So I got the plumbing hoses and whatnot and when I was done it was running like crap. Sounded much deeper than an STi and had pretty rough idle. So I took it out and returned it back to stock. No CEL tho. When I went to turn it back on, everything was fine, idled fine didnt sound like anything was wrong. But when I went to go and drive it this is where I encountered my problem. When I dont put a load on the engine or give it any boost it will run fine. Give it a little gas around 20 mph ran fine. When I floor it while the car is at like 25 mph, it boosts to 10-11 psi when I let off the gas it drops to 5-6psi then when I floor it again it shows 10-11 psi and it hesitates and while I am going like 30-35mph and it blows black smoke. It does not blow black smoke before or anything. It also sounds like I am overboosting because the turbo whines so bad and like its doing 60-70mph. So I check things out a little and it felt to me like the wastegate wasnt opening up at the right time or something. So I changed out my stock boost solenoid for a Perrin EBCS. Same thing happens. Both runs no CEL came on. So right now I have it at the shop, they couldnt figure out what it could be. The mechanic is going tolook it over thouroghly but when he took it out for a test drive today he said he took it around the corner and it kept dying on him at least 6 or 7 times before he got it back to the shop. Quite unusual. If you guys can help me out I would appreciate it greatly. I've kinda narrowed the problem down to either fuel or turbo problem or sensor related problem.

Mods on my car: DNX muffler, OBX RFL BOV recirculated to intake mani, MAF adaptor with shorty cone filter, removed chimney and water protector, Perrin Performance EBCS, Bosch Plat 4's, Beltronics VectorPro GX2, Autometer Boost Gauge.

UPDATE: Well I ended up taking it to the shop and they smoked out the engine, found out that I had a major boost leak coming from all my intake tubes and hoses. Ended up replacing the necessary hoses in the car but as far as my intake is concerned, the tube for the throttle body that runs to one of the turbo outlets I cannot find. So I will be getting an STI top mount and new components from Ebay and will be replacing the intake side with brand new aluminum piping and silicone elbows. Hopefully this will solve my hesitation problem. The repair shop will also be taking out all non-critical emissions hoses and parts since I have no emissions laws where I live. Once I get my car going again I will take pics of what it looks like when it is done. :-D

hmmm, what about the pressure sensor?

i know when i first started screwing around with mods, the hose that ran to my pressure sensor was a little loose, and anytime there was a load, it would read faulty and everything would cut out. replaced it with a tighter fitting hose and all was fine.
