Any downside to overfilling brake fluid?

Post by Adam West »

Topped off the Blue Fluid today and slightly overfilled it. Wasn't taking into account the displacement for the cap. So I'm over the full line but didn't overflow it and make a mess. Any downside to leaving as is? Or should I get out the turkey baster and get it down to the full line?

i would imagen when the fluid gets hot it will expand and some might leak out.

it shouldn't be a problem unless you have a '93, which are known to explode when brake fluid drips on to the '93 style firewall ports.

Should not be a problem, but my ABS unit cracked and started leaking fluid after having my resevoir overfilled...

Coincidence? No idea, but I'm scared as all get out to have that thing over the Full line. :)

Make sure to clean up any spilled brake fluid with liberal amounts of brake cleaner or soap and water.

Brake fluid is nasty stuff and likes to eat paint

...Just carefully pulled outa 1/2 ounce. Used the kids (or our cats) extra, unused, cough medicine syringe...Lucky didn't over flow or splill a drop. (or was it skill?)...Need a funnel next time, tipping the can in that area full of hoses is a pain.

Thanks for the help! Kind of a dorky question but sure appreciate the answers...

Got it from board vendor Barrett Dash aka Legacy294 for around $16 shipped since I'm fairly close to Bend, Or. Pm him for a good deal, he ships quickly...

You're not supposed to take into account the displacement of the cap. The black rubber thingie on the underside of the cap is just meant to take up room when the fluid level drops. After you fill the reservoir, you should fold the black rubber thingie back into the cap. Hopefully this makes sense, or will when you look at it in person.

And that is how I finally got my brake light to stay off.

Works great emptying it out when you flush it, just don't let the wife catch you! Does not make the turkey taste any better though.

You shouldnt overfill the fluid because the next time you compress the caliper while replacing pads it will spill all over the drivers side of the engine bay (especially if you didnt take the lid off first).
