It's always cool to be humble but your efficiency at collecting and applying the proper data is in itself a kind of genius. At the very least it shows a excellent attention to detail. And that's not even taking the whole conversation about R134 vs R12 and compressor thread into consideration .
Yeah, like I said, my name is next to the ROM IDs that came from my scan tool. I haven't tested it, but I don't think that this scan tool will work correctly at the moment for some of those though.

I tried to build the converter that Vikash designed for this and was not able to make it work with this software. Did anyone else make one of these and have any sucess with them?
I keep geting the "port closed" message.
If not, I suppose I will try building the one from their site.
I built a hybrid of the two designs with a 7805 and the max232 inclusive of all the capacitors spec'd by the vwrx site.... once I got all the stuff in the right spot and verified power I slipped the max232 into the dip socket turned on the car (I added a LED to the 12v so I know when the unit is getting power), plugged in my laptop to the COM1 port, fired up ScanTool, started the scan and BINGO! INFORMATION!!!! YEAH!!
Now I have a place to start diagnotics on this problem child.... leaky injectors, super low power right after warm up... bla bla.
Thanks all of you that have put effort into creating the schematics and code for the rest of us.
Has anyone tried running this scan tool with the discrete converter cable listed on the VWRX website?
I've got a few NDS355AN transistors on order and will be finishing the cable once those come in. It seems the MAX232/3-based cable works, but I'd like some feedback from those that may have built the discrete converter cable.
So I built the integrated cable as per the vwrx site. Unfortunately I cant get it to work. I've had the circuit checked by a friend, and it is correct to the best of our knowledge.
So questions:
1. Can I perform a check with a voltmeter somehow to verify that the circuit is working? What type of outputs should I be seeing on pins 14 & 13 on the 232IC, while plugged into the car and laptop?
2. I'm running a USB to serial converter. Is this my problem due to the baud rate? This is by no means my forte...? Is it time to go grab the desktop and drag it out to the garage to eliminate the laptop as the problem?
looks like the USB adapters wont work, judging by the RS Liberty club board, guys working on a USB version of the cable. I don't have serial, so I think I am going to use the Parallel and the monitor found here.
Doesn't look like anyone has gotten the VWRX version working with a parallel cable. anyone know why that is?

Does anyone know what I would need to make this work with my DELL Inspiron 6400? I have a 15 pin connector on back and 4 usb ports also a circle port with a t.v. above it. I found a 15 pin connector at the shack but i'm not sure how i would connect the wire's.
I have now spent a small amount of cash and about 6 hours of my time and I can't get either the original (VRG3 version) or the other one to work and I think I fubar-ed the cables or something...
anyone want to make me a cable to work with one of the programs so I don't feel like the electronics retard here? I drive a legacy, not the short bus...
