my brother is looking to buy a 91 awd turbo legacy tomorrow and he took it for a test drive tonight and said he didint think he could hear the turbo spooling up or any sort of sound from the bpv.
although he would be compairing it to my car (92, conefilter, coffermug, 2.5" exhuast, no cats) he should still be able to hear the turbo a little bit corect?
is there any way we could check the turbo tomorrow on a short test drive from the dealer ship?
how to check if the turbo is going

the stock turbo, with cooling chimmney, hood scoop, then snorkus(charge pipe). you probably wont here it. and if ya do they are not that loud. and they dont have a Blow off valve. they have a recirculating valve. it just dumps charge pipe air pressure to pre-turbo. so in other words you wont hear it like a blow off valve.
if your daring have someone put the car in drive and then firmly push down on the brake and put the ebrake on. then with the hood up, push down on the gas. after a second or two you should hear the turbo spooling up

i know that these cars dont have a bov thats why in my post i said bpv (bypass valve) i knwo they are pretty quite but on my car with the mods done mine sounds like a bov inside and out side of the car. i figured with all the stock intake it will be a lot quiter then my carthehookeup wrote:the stock turbo, with cooling chimmney, hood scoop, then snorkus(charge pipe). you probably wont here it. and if ya do they are not that loud. and they dont have a Blow off valve. they have a recirculating valve. it just dumps charge pipe air pressure to pre-turbo. so in other words you wont hear it like a blow off valve.
i tryed this a little just sitting in the dealership lot. only a little because there was a lot of cars around and the owner watch me haha. ill take it for a drive tomorrow and see how it goes.thehookeup wrote:if your daring have someone put the car in drive and then firmly push down on the brake and put the ebrake on. then with the hood up, push down on the gas. after a second or two you should hear the turbo spooling up
Put a temporary boost/vacuum gauge and check it's spool-up time. If there is any kind of whining coming from the turbo area then its probably the bears or an exhaust leak (most likely turbo) Check the intake piping for oil, if there is a lot of it then there might be a problem with the bearing seals

until i pulled off my chimney, i never heard the turbo spool up.
i have a 3"tbe as well.
with the chimney off i could hear it from time to time (when the music was off).
on the other hand, the vf34 has alot of spooling noise.

You should be able to feel it when the turbo hits, shouldn't you? I mean, I know a stock SS doesn't put out a whole lot of oomph, but still...
My point is, with low compression, the car would really feel dead if the turbo wasn't spooling up.
