I think she broke again (tranny) and if so, it's over!

Post by legacy92ej22t »

I was driving nice and mellow when suddenly my car started making a really bad clacking sound. I pulled over to investagate and at idle in neutral it's a clack, clack, clack sound coming from what sounds like the tranny bellhousing. It's speed sensative and disappears when I engage the clutch. In 1st it's extremely loud CLACK CLACK CLACK and is speed sensative and becomes louder with power. It pretty much dissappears during shifts (clutch engaged) and once in 2nd or higher it's very hard to notice too. It's either something with the pressure plate, throwout bearing or 1st gear in the tranny. Either way I don't have the time or money to drop the tranny and see and/or fix it.

I will most likely run it into the ground since I can't afford another car or not drive right now (start my management training in 2-3 weeks), and once it quits I'll most likely part the bitch out. SO, be on the look out for a major part out.

I certainly hope you don't throw in the towel, but if you do I would like first chance at the CES cross pipe and up pipe. I already have the CES TBE. Maybe you need a cheap transportation vehicle and can keep the Legacy until you have the funds to keep it going. Don't make any rash decisions that you may regret later. Good luck.

I feel that way about the Mazda, but I've had tiny problems (I just have low tolerance). You put up with more from that car than I ever would or did with the shitty 260Z I had.

That said, I'd be interested in the VLSD.

Yeah, yoy have first dibs on the VLSD and my old tranny is still on hold for you too Steve. Just LMK if you don't want either anymore....

Klein- I'd like to keep the car and have a cheap commuter car, it's just I'm completely broke right now and unless I sell my parts I probably can't afford anything.

If it comes to a part out I'll let you have first crack at the pre-turbo CES stuff.

I hear ya Matt, I'm so fucking pissed at my car right now. I was this close to taking that fucking awic and smashing it on the floor with a sledge hammer.

I'll call 2nd dibs on the CES pre-turbo stuff if something falls through with keinkid.

Matt, this is no good!

You haven't really been beating on the car though, so that's an odd problem to be having.

Noise clutch-out, but goes away clutch in. That means it has to be something related to the clutch, or first and second gear, or the bearings on the input shaft. Possibly fluid.

I would be nervous driving it, but I know you need to do what you gotta do. Be as easy as you can, and stay off boost. That will keep it lasting as long as possible.

I'm really sorry this happened Matt. Let me know if there is anything I can do.

sounds like a bum throw out bearing. I had it like that on my van for at least 20k.

Well, I definitely think it's tranny related, probably something with 1st gear or maybe second. Last night it got siezed up in second. I couldn't even shift into neutral. I had to drive all the way home from work in 2nd. The clutch worked fine during this though. Once I got home I was screwing with the stick after I shut off the car and I got it to pop out of second, then it works fine, I can totally shift but the clanking sound is still there and just as bad.

Tranny fluid is in great shape and at proper level....

Sounds like what happened to my transmission. I lost the ability to use 3rd, but only until I restarted the car. Made throw out bearing noises, too, but was likely the input shaft bearings.

It would be good if you could fix her up.

But if you part her out, I'd be interested in the CES tbe and the LGT wheels/tires!

Ever since I got the tranny to release back out of second it shifts fine. 1st gear has an extremely loud clanking sound that is speed sensitive and only seems to be present in first and I can slightly hear it in neutral. It dissapears as soon as I engage the clutch.

Thanks for the sympathetic words everybody.

The bad luck I've had with this car is all self induced though, to be honost. It ran like a fucking top before I started modding it. Big power plus aging parts is a recipe for disaster.....

I really just want a bug eyed WRX wagon, swap over a couple of go fast bits off my car and call it a day. *sigh* I can dream I guess.

Hey, they're slowly getting cheaper. That would be pretty awesome if you swapped the 2.2 short block over too.

Maybe not today, but at some point.

Yeah, hopefully I can get something soon.

I was thinking, could the problem be in my front diff? The problem surfaced during a turn and that's the area I hear the niose coming from....kind of. Just a thought.

It might be cool in a way but it would be nice to not have to do a lot of fitting when you can buy kitted out packages.

People definitely blow their front diffs, but I don't know anything about it. Did you try calling Phil?

Front diff is possible, but unlikely.

I HAVE seen axles pull out of diffs. That causes grinding noises and slipping. But I've only really seen that in the rear, though I imagine it can happen on the fronts if the roll pins fall out.

Even if it's a front diff problem, the trans must be dropped and cracked open for the swap to be done. Then, you'd ideally replace the ring gear AND the pinion gear from your old transmission. That means breaking down the output shaft and replacing the pinion shaft/gear. Then you have to worry about pinion depth setting, which must be accurate to the ten thousandth of an inch.

It's less-bad than a blown gear, but it's still not shiny and smiley.

Dude, Matt my appologies. I'm sorry to hear that. If you need it, I have a 2.5 RS tranny mount that you can have for free if it will help. I would hate to see you have to give up on her. If you want I'm sure we can organize a lend a hand trip to PA to get her back to normal.
