Feeler for sale of 93 Turbo Wagon

Post by subinubi »

OK, what kind interest is there out there for a very nice 93 touring wagon in excellent condition, many new parts, awesome interior, etc. It is a rust free Bend, Oregon car. I bought it from the original owner and have records of every part and service ever done. I've recently done everything behind the timing belt cover including a fresh oil pump plus new Walbro fp. It rides on new KYB GR2's, WRX wheels, magnaflow muffler, and on and on. More details upon seeing some interest.

Anyway, wifey is looking for something that gets a bit better economy. It runs exceptionally well, doesn't leak, has too many new parts to mention and the tranny was done by AAMCO at 100k. She has 165K or so now. The only mechanical flaw is that the tranny has developed a whirring noise under load. Not sure what that is and it shifts as good as ever. But that gave me the green light to go for a 5 speed.

Here's the kicker. I have acquired all the goodies to do the swap including an '05 outback sport 5 speed with only 4.4K miles on it, including required pedals, linkages clutch master/slave, tranny crossmember and on and on and on. Oh yes, a 3.90 LSD.

What am I asking? Opinions and or interest. As much as I'd like to complete my project, I have a new house and remodeling projects galore. Is anyone interested in taking on this little project and having one of the sweetest TWs rolling? Does anyone have an opinions on parting things out or building it. I won't give her away, cuz it is a very nice example of this rare car. What say you?

Welcome to the Board! :D

The project sounds quite interesting, especially if the Outback parts will fit without modifications or fabrications. If it can be established for a certainty that the swap will work, I'd be interested in it although I have a feeling it's going to be out of my price range from what you've posted. This afternoon I was examining a transmission jack at Harbor Freight Tools should the need arise for a tranny swap. BTW, what color is the car?

Its white. Finish is pretty good for its age, only a few dings. I did a lot of research to make sure I got the correct parts, per a lot of tutorials on this great site. I haven't really established a price or determined which way to go with it. I've had the car for almost 2 years and put something less than 8k miles on it, I think. The original owner's husband owns Thrifty Auto Parts so she had everything replaced at a shop when it went bad, ie. waterpump, gaskets, even steering rack. Her receipts started at around 100K, so I guess it gave pretty good service up to that.

My dilemma is that I could probably sell the car as is for 3-4K and sell my parts I've collected and make more than if I build it up. Plus, once built I suspect I will love it all the more. Those on this site know what I've got, but commoners may not appreciate the uniqueness of a TW with a new 5 speed, not a worn out vintage 5mt. There you have it.

No, the 05 impreza outback sport wagon has a 3.90, which is a perfect match for my Leg, though I picked up a 3.90 LSD to drop in for a little more traction.

It's just a feeler to see if anyone is interested in the car and/or the project parts. If I did sell it all, the car would have to go first. I've spent a lot of effort collecting the necessary parts to do the swap and would probably get most of my money back if I part it out. I've got the new 5mt, crossmember, clutch assy, pedal assy, crossmember, drive shaft, new drive shafts off of the same 4.4KM 05 OBS wagon as the tranny, 3.90 LSD. I also have a new manual boost controller and Saab intercooler set up, (coolant bottle has been relocated to acommodate this but IC is off til I install BC.)

I just put in a brand new radiator, timing belt, cam seals, idler, oil pump, brakes, HLAs, water pump (fresh at 40K and in good shape, hoses, KYB GR2's, and Alpine/Boston Acoustic system. It runs like a top and you could just about eat off the engine compartment. Everything on the car works great with exception of rear wiper (works intermittently, just haven't gotten round to fixing) and auto tranny has recently developed a whirring noise, though not affecting operation. (50K on AAMCO rebuild).

She runs like a top and would be awesome with the 5MT. I just don't really have the time to do it all. I'm just feeling out interest on this site because as we all know, if I put it all together the value won't increase enough to make it worth the cost, though it woud be SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEETTTT! As they say, my loss could be someone's gain but you gotta bring money. If I build her I'll keep and as I've said, I don't really have time.

Crap, did I mention a boost gauge too....she happily spins to stock 8.7 lbs of boost.

FYI: Just so everyone knows where I'm headed with price, I paid $3200 2 years ago and with just over 11km added, I've improved almost everything on the car, so to be blunt I'm not just going to give it away...but thanks for everyone's interest and/or advice.

Bump for more info: Please see FS 93 TW ad to get links to my pics up on Cardomain. I have taken a lot more detail shots for a few interested parties, and will eventually get them up on the host, if they let me.

In the meantime, I can email more detail shots if anyone is interested. The car is amazingly clean, straight and rust free.

Looks like I'll be keeping her and putting in the 5 speed. I'm a bit torn, cuz its a nice drive easy drive as an auto. Hope the project is worth it.

As far as selling the car after the project, any opinions on the value with a new 5 speed? The car is in outstanding conditon. I think a 5 speed will probably only appeal to enthusiasts like those on this site. I feel a bit like I'm throwing money down a hole, but the car is paid for and so are all the swap componenets, so, in the end, I'll have an effectively new old car.

I'm hoping to net at least 1 or 2 mpg's with the manual, though I think my driving style won't be quite so laid back, hence nullifying any gains.

Are there any informed opinions out there regarding my dilemma and the gas mileage increase I may expect?
