Crikey, Croc Hunter Dead
So Steve Irwin was killed the earlier today by a stingray bard to the heart, basically a freak accident. But any professional in the animal world knew something was going to eventually get him, I always figured it would be a taipan. Here's a link

too bad about his family always said to see kids without a pops, but it happens everyday around the worl.

Yeah, it's all over the news networks.
So he's jammed his thumb up many poisonous snakes' buttholes and pissed off a huge variety of dangerous species... and a freak stingray lodges its tail in his heart and kills him. WTF?!
....iiiiiirony!
I enjoyed watching his shows on occasion though, I'll miss the little bugger.

All the major services have confirmed. I saw it on CNN while I was eating lunch. I believe the AP broke the story.

Interestingly enough, people getting killed by a stingray barb to the chest happens quite often, more often than sharks in some places. Still sad to see him go though...

Actually Stingray deaths are very very rare. That is why this was such a freak accident/occurence. As of 1996, worldwide known deaths from stingray barb injuries numbered 17.

We are getting pretty good coverage of the story over here (Being next to Australia and all).
Seems he was swimming above the Stingray in shallow waters (5ft>) while filming an underwater doco. The Stingray then just raised his tail upwards, getting him in the chest. I wouldnt be suprised if he was doing typical Croc Hunter style poking and prodding though.
Apperantaly most Strigray attacks are in the chest area, due to people trying to grab hold and be dragged around by the Stingray. People need a new hobby when they start doing that. Im thinking Subarus...

Really, I always thought they were more common than that..snowboarded wrote:Wolfeyes88 wrote:Interestingly enough, people getting killed by a stingray barb to the chest happens quite often, more often than sharks in some places. Still sad to see him go though...

Stings are probably pretty common, from people stepping on them and what not. But those are not usually fatal, painful yes but not fatal and usually in the leg.

If he was such an idiot, why did he stay alive all these years? And what would most of those crocs done without him? He saved a lot of animals, it wasn't just about being on Animal Planet.Adam West wrote:Hate to speak ill of the dead but Steve Irwin was a freaking idiot...Someone had to say it. what a shity jack ass thing to say. if this board had an ignore feature you would be on the top of my list for that comment.
the man was a father and a conservationist that has saved tens of thousands of acres of land in australia.
he has educated millions about animals that people used to hate and be terrified of.
i feel very sad for his family. and i will miss his enthusiasm for wildlife and nature.
my wife and i had hoped to travel to australia with our kids and visit his zoo and hoped to meet the man.
hopefully his children will cary on his legacy and continue his work.
everything he did seemed very reckless, when in fact it was very carefully planned and controlled. sure there were some unexpected moments here and there.

What I was trying to say. and well said it was. I love how going into the National Guard is a good career move, but saving animals is being "a freakin' idiot"greg donovan wrote: and the award for classiest poster on the bbs goes to... [etc]

I hate cheerful people as they annoy me, but feel terrible about Mr. Irwin. I always figured something would get him, like a black mamba, but either way it's too bad. He made people appreciate animals nobody really cared for and took a boring genre of documentary and made it entertaining and accesible to kids that will hopefully go on and take better care of this place than their parents and (especially) grand parents. Best wishes to him and his family - he was the regular guy who was very rare. The real deal, no bullshit, just happy to be alive and enjoying the world. I admire him for that as it's something I have trouble with. He's the type of regular guy I'd die to protect so he could have his family and live a good life (hopefully), unlike your average religious freak this country seems to have as the 'regular' guy that I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire and is why I wouldn't be in the military this time around. If there were more people like Steve Irwin maybe I wouldn't hate people so much and maybe I wouldn't have so much reason to.
Timothy Treadwell was an idiot who had no appreciation for nature, just some insane personal ideal he created for himself and he paid the price. Steve Irwin understood nature and the violence inherent in it and was willing to risk the consequence in return for appreciating it more completely and trying to pass on that enthusiasm.
Most people are of no consequence, but I think he was truly a loss. How many other people have accomplished so many positive things in so short a time or even at all? Even if my books are huge, I'm spreading negativity and so I'd have to give him points over even the best dreams for my success vs. his very real success.

Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
No problem. I suppose this is an emotional time for you losing a dear freind from your other reality, TV...
Everyone's entitled to vent some, lemme give you a shoulder...
And I suppose if tackling animals for a living makes you a conservationist, well then, whatevah...
I think Steve summed it up best himself when he said...
"My number one rule is to keep that camera rolling. Even if it's shaky or slightly out of focus, I don't give a rip. Even if a big old alligator is chewing me up I want to go down and go, 'Crikey!' just before I die. That would be the ultimate for me."
Read it and weep fellas.

Crocodile tears or real sorrow. Whatever suits ya...
Cheers,
Adam
