4eat not shifting.....
ive been reading here about shifting problems for hours... i found records of problems with subaru autos being the shift modulator and shift governor... but i dont think this applies to the 4eat???
anyhow, heres our diagnostics so far:
it runs fine in 1st, but wont shift into second unless the revs are very high and its tricked a bit with a throttle blip. then into 2nd it goes... it wont shift up from there to 3rd or 4th....
we have done some recent work to the car... so my guess is (tranny working good before) a cracked / misplaced vaccuum line??? or wire not on / bad connection somewhere...
from what i see in the book / read on here, it seems the computer makes shifting decisions and sends this to the tranny.
any good places to start looking????
thanx,
shnitzel

Have you checked the trans fluid?
What work did you recently do? There are no vacuum lines that control the trans, it's all electronic, and there's two main connectors that connect it to the body harness.

Sounds a lot like a brake band issue commonly seen on the SVXi. Are our trannies like theirs? Maybe we could adopt the same idea on our trannies.

fluid level is good.
i figured no vacuum lines to the tranny. couldnt find any (sometimes THAT doesnt mean there isnt any... ha ha ha) thanx.
brake band... inside... so basically if all the wire connectors are in good shape, were looking at rebuilding / replacing the tranny???
ive read much about solenoids... does this sound like they could be a possible issue??
to me it sounds like it not reading any engine vacuum to know when the throttle is decreasing... therefore not shifting up???

What work was done recently????
Check out these scans regarding the brake band

It might be a solenoid, and you could get at those without dropping the trans....but it's still a decent job.

the car slowly seemed to get worse over time not shifting well into 2nd but no other problems untill one day and it will not shift unless your doin 6ooo rpm. doesn't matter if you try to manual shift the gears.
recent work: new battery, new altenator, new trans oilfilter and oil, have checked the tranny fault codes and came up with nothing.
yet to check all the electrical connections
the car doesn't seem to slip at all, it goes like hell to 70kms/hr but thats it
thanks again for your help

Have you tried clearing the ECU & TCU?
Just curious, you are leaving the car running when you're checking the trans fluid level right?
It's possible some junk was lodged somewhere, and putting new tranny fluid in there loosened it, and gummed stuff up.

i'm not really sure where to find the ecu and tcu units. I looked under the dash on the steering column where it was suggested to be but didn't see it. I've heard the ecu is behind the radio in the dash?
and to clean them would i be just checking the terminal connections for the usual bad connection suspects? Or would i be reseting the ecu and tcu?

I'm sorry, I posted clearning, which isn't a word.
I meant clearing/resetting the ECU. Pull fuse 14 EGI/TCU for an hour or so.
Also for future reference, here's where the ECU & TCU are located.

no didn't fix the problem, had it into an import shop and they said there was no pressure and that the trans was shifting in a bypass mode?
I got another legacy with a std trans and plan to swap it to a manual. wandering if there's any difference of cv drive axles between a turbo auto and a regular legacy with a manual?
