Post and see if anyone has a used injector. Is your car AT or MT? I think I still have my AT injectors....If I have them I'll sell ya all four for pretty reasonable price. If you need something ASAP, you may want to ask blackbart or post, since I'm going to be out of town for the next week or so.
Fix the injector, and we'll worry about the fans afterwards.[/quote]
The wagon is 1990 Subaru Legacy L Wagon AWD Automatic Transmission 16valve MPFI I not sure the lite specs but I do have pics of the wagon in the photo section on this site.
il me or PM if you want to talk deal I still looking at why the injector went out as having more than one thing electrical go out makes me thing the injector could be giving a false info to the main computer on this as well.
Also after clearing the cody everything ran better but started to run ruff and just run the one code for the injector. Tried some injector cleaner to see if it was a cloged port but we been running good gas with no cheap stuff with out some kind of addtive.
looking at how the injectors are it looks like I would have to take both on tha side off and that is after I get the fuel pressure taken off the engine to do so.
Also do I need or should I replace all at one time?
I think I just may have shop install but i will do my best to find a good price on the injectors.
They seem to be good on their cost for doing the work I just don't have a lot of the tools and my one friend that could help is going out of town to Hawii for a week.
Thanks again for help

try this. unplug the wire to the #3 cylinder injector. if it is running rich this will stop it. you will have a 3 cylinder but they should be running good. having done this before it will run. you can replace one injector (bad one please) and be on your way. if you have turned a wrench you should be able to replace an injector. they go is easlier then you think. you have an n/a (non turbo) motor. any subaru in your engine family should do. remove the easy one to get. practice by removing one from junkyard car. that way you see how to remove it and get replacement at same time. good hurting and safe driving. D.

As mentioned, you can replace just one injector.
You can get the injector out by removing the injector cap, and pull the injector out. They can be a pain. It works best to spray some penetrating oil around the injector & rail. Use a twisting motion. That works better.
As I mentioned, you may want to post in the parts shed if you're in need of an injector pretty soon.

I was going to ask is an injector could be taken off line and the if the egain would still running?
I will not testing the engine after clearing the codes to just this one the motor is running very ruff and it seem to be lacking power or not wanting to run faster than 35 to 45 mph.
Is there something that cuts down on the motor's spees and keeps it from damage by not running at full power?
The more I look a this problem the more i keep seeing this as a short of some kind or a bad wire or sensor.
I'll look at it more today and see about calling around for parts here in Calif as i look at a post from Blackbart he has the injectors but he is out of state and we need the parts ASAP.
If I can pull the injector I saw apost on testing the them so I could do that to see if it is the injector maybe.
I just wish people in the local subaru groups out here could help me work on this but most let the shop do their work.
As for me if it electrical I good but for engine stuff I wan't the greasmonkey in the famliy just the one wanting a computer when i was 5 years old and my famliy would ssay they cost too much.. Of corse it was 1965 so ya that wa bit much them lol.
Ok all have agreat weekend I have my freind car for the weekend wile he is in Hawii for a week(lucky him) and waiting for $$$ to come in then i can get parts and all.
BTW if I wanted to change injectors type are there better Injectors that can be installed? i know ita wagon but abything to get it running better than it has been which was OK till last Friday night.
Ok all take care and Thanks for the Kind words on believeing i can do this injector replacement. Who knows i may just go for it and try and just keep the books on hand and all..
Thanks.

Ok did the test of the injector with it dissconnected and well I took of the #3 plug and it ran the same but going from there when i got to the # 4 and did same the engin ran as it should and even idled at the right rpms.
Could this be a bad ECU more than a bad injector? and I was thinking what about plug wires as well? these look nice and new but it the are not working as they should could throw things out as well.
I checked the code more time than i can thing and the same # cound comes up and it saids code 16 not 17..I woder it it could be both 3 and 4? didn't think to dissconnect both wasn't sure that would be safe. tried to clean the code to see if the cound would change or the code it self.
Also found two panels for the fuel pump and sensors as well so i can disconnect the pump and all to bleed out the fuel to remove the injector if needed.
Ok well that it for now
Thanks all and hope your weekend i more fun than minds..

So you removed injector wire number 4, and the car ran better, and the way it was supposed to????

Yep .. this sounding more tlike a short or some sort of bad connection.Legacy777 wrote:So you removed injector wire number 4, and the car ran better, and the way it was supposed to????
and the code still said #3 is the problem.
I just hope it isn't something that si going to cost $$$$ to fix..
will be sending off to the Shop soon as the Fund come in.. I'm not going to drive it even if the RMPs and power seem normal with the #4 injector discconted. My luck it would blow the engineand thats I can not let happen.
I think I will talk to some one at an AutoZone and see if some one can help me test the system as they do testing with one of the Alldata systems(AllData owns AutoZone an has a major office here in Sac)
Ok well I done what I think I can for now.. so of to the shop and hope it doesn't break the bank.
Thanks all

Sorry didn't mean to confuse anyone.. what I was trying to say was that the Engine light was still giving me one code for the #3 injector but doing what was posted her and by unplug connector on the #3 injector the engine still ran the same.
On testing the others the same way when I did the #4 injector the engine ran normal but the code was still there for the #3 injector.
So now i have to figure out how to get the wagon to the shopand get it fixed. and hope it won't cost me an arm and leg to do so.
Ok well tha abou the short of it if you are still confused sorry that best I can do with no sleep and a migrain right now.

The ECU should throw an Injector #4 code as well if the injector is unplugged. If this isn't happening then I would say there is either an electrical problem or a damaged ECU. The most important thing in any case is to make sure the ECU is cleared every time you make a change. Its a pain but it will keep you from second guessing. Just take the neg and pos battery cable off for a few minutes.
One important tool that you will find amazingly helpful is a noid light in this case. Then you could at least see if you are getting signal to the injector. Unless the car has been sitting for a while or you ran crappy gas I would be doubtful of a bad injector.

I did clear the ECU a few times as well. and still the code flash 16 time not 17 and I watch it like more time than I would liked to. I think it could be the ECU my self as well or at lease something connected that I have missed looking at.realfinn wrote:The ECU should throw an Injector #4 code as well if the injector is unplugged. We run Shel,76 or Chevron mostly . Now as for sitting.
the people we got this wagon from said it was drove in SF mostly and to Sac and Tahoe, Now some time wile in SF it was broken into and the Radio taken out alone with the panel it was seated in. I a new radeo in there but no panel as of yet.
Looking the wagon over the first thing i see after digging into it is that this was party wagon but it did sit some as for leaves in betwwen the Radiator and cooling grill and the sand and dirt in it.
they did nothing to clean the car but wash the out side.
they more broken glass parts in the wagon in area that if they had just broken one window in the back.
The sterring week center is missing screw that make think that some took it off to see if there was air bag maybe and the radio was disconeected very clean but for the face place around it.
some had time so this wagon was parked some place would not been seen and could have sat that way for some time.
Carfax never come back with it getting wrecked and I got the DMV lady to search and they was never a non op filed it has all ways passed smog but for the second time in it life as well.
I have some of the repair shop bills they showed as to what work was done but if you look at the engine you can see some newer parts in sensors and hose and wires.
I look all over the engine but for under the wagon and not sure what else to look at. I thought of change out the plug wires but if it is the coil that is more costly but that would be next if I wanted to check the firing of the engine.
If it would help I could shot video of how the engine is running and how it runs with the #4 injector wire off?
I will let everyone know what I find when to the sho as they are as stumped as me as well. They di say it could be one of the othere codes like the Crank sensor or the O2 sensor as they said the injectors are pertty hard to kill.
Ok well I should know by end of week if not by next on the wagon.
Thank you all for your help but I think at this point unless some has a very good idea we should call this thred done for now.
Again sorry for the incoherent post I tend to just type as i think and well that a bit off as well lol..
Thanks all

Make sure the injector plugs are connected to the correct injector. They plugs/wires are labeled with numbers.

Hi all I am still waiting to get the wagon off to the shop as they said for me to wait before towing it in and waitng a week to get it out.(I was going get it have them fix it then pick it up the next week)
They seem to think this will be a few hour job to fix which is good and all but I hate having to wait till we get a paycheck in.
Anyway what want to say is thanks all of you that have posted to my rather long topic now have been very kind and not over critcal of my questions and over all bad gramer post and all.
I tried asking a more local group her in Sac about help in finding good shop and well I was first not answer then after re-posting I got nearly flamed over asking a simple question as to if there was shop closes to me and one that had towing(some do).
Thank you all for you help and info and just not trying to flam me off for just asking a question.

Ok well we got it in and out the same day and it was the #3 injector. the main fan he said isn't suppost to start with the engin unless it is hot but he said the radiator is an after market and is larger than the norm so it could be running cooler than the normal one.
I seem to have more power and the engine is running very good but wife want the AC back on ASAP so its going to be done but I told her they have to convert the R12 over to the newer AC type.
Still no idea on why we had the 4 codes till i clear it to just one but they seem to like the fact I had the codes for them set and ready. It took no time at all for the shop and was under $100 for the fix.
they even fixed a part on the radiator that was linking a bit and for free. this shop has my business and they have guy next door selling refurbed Subarus too...
Ok thanks for all you help

Will be taking the wagon in to get the whole wagon check out front to back to see what more need to be done but all seem good for now.
Ok all thank you for helping out this. The guy at the shop said by doing the code checking it saved me really big and that what I really wanted to hear too.
