STI RA gear set part #

Post by NICO »

well it broke agian, 1 month of use on a 2400000km scrap yard tranny.

had to bye a sweet 1992 svx just to get around. so now i have 3 broken turbo legacy 91 5mts.

options:

5mt dogbox stright cut full group N gears set 12000 canadian.

6mt with out dccd sti, can use 5mt flywheel clutch pressure plate fork and master slave, mates to stock lsd 3.9 legacy turbo 38000canadian

6mt sti with dccd 4000canadian and need a wack load of parts.

anyone got some ideas my price is 4000canadian, half dog box, rwd, fwd, diffrent year of subaru gears that can be put in the stock 5mt to make it better, or fix all 3 trannys to stock and change them as they blow?

1 tranny awd for winter?
1 tranny fwd for autum?
1 tranny rwd for sexy summer?

Built 4eat $3800 US, that's with the high-stall converter.

What makes an auto box work is bags of torque :-D

Fast shifts, jumps off the line all day long, and is quiet.

If you don't like the tcu you can buy an electronic box to manually control the shifts.

Downside----at partial throttle the shifts go "clunk". :-)

Until this set up I hated "slush-boxes".

This site records a lot of misery with manual transmissions, and it seems the only way to accomodate aggressive launches and shifting is with a fearsome clutch and a dog box.

How fast does your tranny downshift? How fast does it take to from off the gas to on the gas and find the right gear? Those are the things that bother me about the 4EAT.

Lots of engine torque and the stall converter makes it work.

Although not dynoed, prolly putting down 200+ lb-ft of torque at the wheels. When the traffic light turns green the jump on WOT is impressive.

When driving along at 25mph, for example, and when flooring it the tranny shifts down two gears and the rush starts. Then come the upshifts at 6000 rpm. All you do is keep your foot buried and steer.

It happens quick enough for me. I have yet to hold my foot on the brake with some revs and boost for a power launch.

No matter which way it is done, there is no bogging down and you don't have to rely on wheel spin to keep the revs in the power band. The stall converter performs the equivalent of that function.

Wheelspin in the dry with AWD :?:

Derek

I had a N/A wgn and the two lower gears had a bigger spread between the ratios, and the down shifting through the tcu was frustrating :?

The the stock twgn was somewhat less so, because the ratios are closer.
However on each stage of more performance the tcu shifting became less frustrating.

But this was still bothering me when the build was done so I ordered the manual electronic shift unit, but have yet to install it. It will shift on a push button, also there is a toggle switch for lock up.

As mentioned in the above post, the more the torque---the better it works. :D

Talk to Phil (Bac5.2) - his company builds monster gearboxes. If I decide to keep going with my wagon I'll be getting a box from him.

RA gearset? ha. good luck. It'll break. They aren't stronger than stock gears. It's a total waste of money.

How much do you want to spend?

Outrageously strong = dogbox.

A 1-4 dogbox built will cost you $6050US for straight cut, $6250 US for a helical cut.

A built syncro box will cost you $4500US including syncros (but we need a core from a 99+ transmission).

Both will be infinitely stronger than an RA box.

To counter Subtle's automatic love. Dogbox. AWD burnouts in the dry... through first gear... on the 1-2 shift... on the 2-3 shift... on the 3-4 shift.

With the power I was making, I broke all 4 loose on the 1-2 and the 2-3 shifts. And I could shift faster than a stock-valve-bodied Subaru Automatic. Plus, downshifting was just a blip of the throttle away. I could roll in 1st gear at 25mph and the INSTANT my foot touches the floor, the rush hits. If I was in 3rd at 25mph, I could shift DIRECTLY into 1st gear, and the rush would hit. No waiting for the transmission to shift into 2nd, and then again down into 1st.

But, I will admit. A built automatic is fun. A high-stall auto in a WRX with a PE1820 is fun at the line. A coworkers wife's car made 12psi at the line. When he puts the 2.5 bottom end in it, we are expecting around 20psi at the line. Nuts.

I miss my stomp-o-matic. But I'm quite happy with the 5mt.
