car stalls when put in gear.

Post by 92Turboleg »

i just read through all the pages and found a few similar probs. but nothing exactly like my prob. my prob. is the car when shifted into any gear will just stall no matter what temp . i had a code 24 sol.c in current code and 33vss in my history codes. the tranny fluid is actually quite pink and unburnt . it had sorta a slip feel to it and would occasionally have trouble at highway speeds , like it didn't know wether to go into lockup or not. one time when i had it on the lift i could hear a buzzing noise comeing from inside (towards the rear) of the tranny pan. this was with the KOEO so i disconnected the batt. set the car down and the noise went away and so did the prob. but then tonight i have the same lockup prob. with no noise and it does not go away when i disconnect the batt. only thing i can come up with is the tq conv. is stuck in lockup. anyone had this prob. sorry its so long, thanks in advance

have you cleared the tcu codes. pulling fuse 16 egi/tcu for 15 min will clear the codes. I'd be a little suspicious of the VSS code. When my cable base went out, I had some issues with the car stalling, or coming close to it.

lockup is dependant on not only the solenoide, but the lockup clutch in the torque converter. this is a common problem on the GM TMH125C unit (Cavalier, Corsica, Beretta, etc). 50% of the time it's solenoid, 50% it's converter. We do them both at the same time because the labor for doing the solenoid is about $25 less than the converter, so it just makes sense to do it all at once.

As for the subaru, if it's not the solenoid it's the converter. the only (way off in left field) option is that you have a crack in the valve body that's causing a cross leak, but I find that unlikely.
