Rear Differential Noise

Post by point_7 »

Hey,

I've been searching the different Legacy forums but have yet to find an answer for a problem I've been having with my 1998 Legacy Wagon.
When I first had the car there was a distinct whine from the rear differential, that got louder the faster I traveled. A few days ago the noise stopped and a new noise appeared from the same area. It is now a metal on metal noise with a hint of a whine.
I'm new to the Subaru world and I was wondering what can be done about this situation. I have been searching for a differential that will fit my car properly but I cannot find what gear ratio I will be needing [3.90 or 4.11].
Does anybody know which other Subaru differentials will bolt onto my car and how long does the process usually take?

You may want to to check out the legacy forums on http://forums.nasioc.com/forums as there are more newer gen legacy owners over there.

They may be able to tell you for sure about the gear ratios.

There usually is a sticker on the back cover of the diff that says what ratio it is. My 5mt is a 4.111.

My best advice is to get a Haynes manual or download a FSM
from Josh's site as afr as knowing what is involved in swapping a diff.

They stopped putting the stickers the rear diffs in 95.
If your 98 Legacy has the manual tranny it should have a sticker on the tranny TY752VACAA, this is 3.90
I don't have the tranny numbers for the autos.
