how do u remove plastic engine cover

i know this is a dumb question, but i cant figure out how to take the plastic cover of the engine, please help

Carefully,...The little circles aren't exactly where the posts meet the rubber grommets...Easy peasy tho. Easy to break, brittle by the chimney...oops,no chimney?

not before you pull the torque converter bolt out, though. you might snap the ring & pinion. It'll be fine if you do, but a pain when you want to reinstall it.

I have an extra one if you need it. I broke my first one when I was taking it off. Be careful with the air wrench. The bolts that hold that cover on are a pain in the butt. Make sure you don't crack the housing on it either, it attaches to the inverse torque converter rod, so of course you know that means it is brittle.

I'm confused - the black plastic thingee in the middle with the writing on it? Held on by four rubber bushing/grommet thingees...

Given that few Legacys seem to have one anymore I'd say the tool of choice has been the hammer.

mine has been sitting in the garage for 3 years.

i know i have 16 valves and fuel injection and do not like covers.

That's a clean engine bay.
+1 for pulling straight up, wiggle it a little too.

Or get a pry bar under it and smack it.

Not unless you can get the injection strap untapped from the bottom. Most mechanics don't know you have to do that.

Might want to buy two cans of PB Blast because you definately are going to use alot of that to get it off.

1990legacy, first of all, welcome to the Board.

I hope you realize that most of the guys are playing with you. They already like you as they are joking with you.

If you just pull up it should come off without breaking the cover. The cover has four protrusions that are held onto a metal bracket by rubber grommets.

So, no bolts to undo, no pry bar needed, no worrying about the torque converter, etc.

I'm saying all of this because I used to ask the same kind of questions. Once you start working on your car it gets easier and easier. Most times I have found that I'm too gentle with my car (so that I don't damage it) but all it takes sometimes is a little more "oomph" . . . although a few days ago I sheared off the tip of a 1/2"-to-3/8" adaptor trying to loosen the strut bolt (I should have known that I needed a 1/2" drive socket---but Sears replaced it since the Craftsman tools have a lifetime warranty on them).

And, yeah, you do have a super clean engine bay. Did you just pressure wash it recently?

thanks, i'll give it a try and yes it was wash'd by a shop when i had the Oil sending unite replaced, nice and clean.

yes clean bay there, looks like mine. is that a zip tie holding the belt cover on the left side??? If so, bravo. I use zip ties everywhere that it is OK to do so (you learn this quick in motorcycle racing). Although, you might want to put a bolt there, unless you have a broken bolt in the threads or something. Wouldnt want the zip tie to shear off and have the cover tangle up the belt, ouch.

Engine covers are annoying. Anyone seen a 98+ Beetle? Unruly. I have a pile of engine covers in the garage, I cant stand that Jap crap, basically useless and just another thing to remove when doing something simple.

If the grommets are hard you can get new ones at the stealership.

Other than that, I'm impressed with the bright red grounding kit and its set up around the cover

I like the cover, so I put one on my '95

It's easy to uninstall.
