Whats goes in this hole in my dash?

Post by BSOD2600 »

I was trying to figure out what alarm came with with my car so I took off the lower part of the dash. Noticed the panel below is empty. What feature/device is suppose to go in there?

My 91 has the coin tray, marked Tray and with an easy-open handle.

My 92 and 94 both have the plain plastic panel there, it can be popped off pretty easily by hand.. and makes a pretty inconspicuous hiding place.

They never made the coin trays for the black interior, only a plastic cover. You can, though, get a coin tray from a junk yard in any color and paint it with "BBQ Black" spray paint from walmart. I've found it's a perfect color match for the black interior.

I also found it was a good place to extend the check connectors into... to flash engine codes all I have to do is pop the cover and connect 'em up, instead of having to remove that piece. I lengthened the wires enough so that the panel can be dropped to the floor safely.

Of course, I've since installed a parallel connector and power for my car laptop to run Vikash's select monitor software, so I haven't needed to flash any engine codes...

I didn't realize it was an interior color thing and not a model year thing, that's strange.

To answer the original question.

On 92-94's I do believe that is where there is a bit of ABS stuff. Not a coin tray. Or atleast my blue interiored 93' L (with no ABS) didn't have a coin tray and just had the cover. Somewhere around on it there is something stamped ABS if I recall correctly.

My 93 and 94 both had blank covers in that spot. I don't anything with the ABS goes in there.

And yes it is a great hiding spot. With a little dynamat or rubber coating inside, nobody would know the difference.

Flip the large panel over, not the cover, but the underdash panel and what's it say on the back of it?

It's stamped "ABS" because it's made out of ABS plastic. :-)

Yeah, I should have clarified that the 92-94's only have a block-off plate there.

The ABS models have the control module right under the stereo, ahead of the shifter. It sticks out of the dash, unlike the non-ABS models that have a recess in that area.

I thought that was the airbag control module?

yes, the thing under the stereo, in front of the shifter is the SRS air bag module.

ABS = antilock braking system
SRS = supplemental restraint system (ie...air bags)

ABS control module is located under the front passenger seat.
