swapped in ej20 and five speed in 93 tleg
p.o.s. wont start sounds like only one plug firing. used ej22 wiring harness. getting fuel, new plug and wires. does newer ej20 have differnt firing order?
any help appreciated
considering a gallon of gas and match!
j.k.
if wrong topic i appolagise
What ECU are you running? It is possible to adapt the stock wasted spark ignition system to work with a EJ20G as long as you are running the EJ22T ECU.
If you are using the EJ20G ECU then you will need a 4 channel ignitor, and 4 coils for each separate spark plug. I happen to have the ignitor you will need and the coils (assuming you dont have them)
If you happen to already have the right ignitor/coils, then the problem is most likely in the wiring. Since you adapted the EJ22T harness you might have gotten some of the wiring wrong, its easy to do when you are adapting plugs and whatnot.
using stock 22t ecu and wasted spark
have fuel and spark checked timming right on
compression avg 120 psi
subaru tech says will not work with 22t ecu
doesnt know why though
need help
wiring harness is all original besides temp sensor wire extended and tps wires replaced.
was told by res in costa mesa that ecu will not work. no reason given
Well, did your EJ20G come with coil-on-plug ignition?
I don't know what JDM cars came with coil-on-plug or not, but I can say that you'll probably need to use an EJ20G ECU, or at least an ECU that works with coil-on-plug ignition.
Without going into big detail, the waste-spark design only has two coils, and the ECU fires each coil twice in a complete combustion cycle. With the coil-on-plug, the ECU fires each of all 4 coils once each complete combustion cycle.
"Der Wahnsinn ist nur eine schmale Brücke/die Ufer sind Vernunft und Trieb"
ej20g came with coil on plug swapped it to wasted spark
so ej22 ecu should work
dont know what year jdm ej20 is
differnt style injectors compared to 22t
#1 The tech you are talking to doesn't know what he's talking about. There is no reason you can't run this engine on the Ej22T ECU, assuming you did things correctly, which from what you are saying, it sounds like you did.
I would check all of your splices and make sure you don't have a short. Also double check your grounds. There is a ground to the intake manifold harness that is often overlooked when it gets moved over to the EJ20G maniifold. It grounds between the fuel rails and manifold.

Suby Hai!
fired but ran like crap the electrical was a possible issue. all connections were good but harness was alittle melted(wife over heated old motor) went thru whole harness it is serviceable
when it started i had to floor it to keep it running it would not rev over 2000 rpm. changed oil it smelled like gas. now will not start again.
when it started b4 the maf was connected the elbow but not two the air cleaner box
Have you put the old IAC on the new engine?
When I have the EJ20G engine, I tried to connected to the IAC on the new EJ20G intake, but it runs the car idal high, then I just take out the old IAC from the EJ22T and just hang it somewhere near the firewall (just connect the connector to the IAC and it just seat near a firewall) and the car runs well.
Hope it help!
Oil/gas mixture normally happens when she's out of time. Or you have valve problems. I would check the timing again. When I did the timing on my first soob I used a hanes manual (Big problem)...there instructions are very misleading and in my opinion are incorrect (they use poor english in the description). The FSM was much better but still seemed to give a round about away of timing (they make it a lot more difficult than what it actually is).
IIRC they both call the notch in the cam gear the allignment mark, probably should be called the BELT alignment mark. I confused this for being a TDC alignment mark as on the crankshaft. I ended up having to take my buddies timing cover off to discover this.
the air control valve on the ej22 is under the intake manifold on the right side of the engine. the ej20 iac is on the left side top. do they interchange? as for the timing the sub tek checked and confirmed it was on. it fired up again really noisy almost like pinging at idle then died.
wiring is good. think i found problem though only half of coil is sparking wiring checks out good between coil and igniter, tried extra igniter no change, coil is off running car
going to check wiring to ecu
any ideas?
Might want to check with others that have had this problem. But when my coil died I ended up cranking the engine over and after a few time I put fuel right in the up pipe (no way to get rid of it since it wasn't firing). So I had to pull the up pipe off a little to get rid of the excess fuel. I would suggest at least checking this. It only took about 15 minutes to drop the center pipe out of the stock pipe.
if any body is interested the timing bumps on the intake cam are differnt on ej20 than ej22.changed com gears(yes they do fit)know getting spark from all coils. car still wont run. cam timing is differnt on engines.
You mentioned that the MAF was "hooked up" but not to the air box?
Car WILL NOT RUN if the MAF is not included in the air flow!!!!!!

yes maf was hooked up in the air flow! it wasnt hooked up to the air cleaner box. it was hooked up to the elbow which was hooked up to the resonator which was hooked up to the turbo 90.
