WOO! mpg!

Post by Fishy »

I finally got the fuel leak sorted out in my 94 turbo wagon. I did a couple runs of heavy duty highway driving mixed with some backroad touring this weekend (about 900kms worth) and averaged exactly 25mpg. I reckon that's pretty respectable for a really old automatic, awd station wagon loaded with stuff. :-D

I'm starting to work on upkeep parts here now. I already did wires and she's getting due for new plugs again. Fuel filter and PCV valve are waiting for installation as well. oh and new tires soon.

I'm getting excited to see how "good" the mileage can get. Keeping in mind, of course, that it's certainly not a fuel miser by design.

I have a "foot leak" on my car that constantly goes into boost. :smt074

So I got some other cars that get 30+ so the turbo can sit until its time to play. :)

No way you're getting that kind of mileage.

I asume you're talking to that Murphy fellow. Maybe he doesn't have a turbo and only drives downhill? :-D

Hehe, for sure. I've had plenty of Subies in my day and I've never seen one that gets 33 mpg ever.

Have you had a Impreza with the EJ18? I just got one that does an actual 35 mpg.

Wow, never would have thought they got that much. I was guessing that 26 or 7 was about it. I guess the GL's, and L's just don't get very good mileage.

Why is that? My '89 GL 4x4 gets 30 mpg full of camping gear (with some a/c use).

The condition of the vehicle and the driver can make a huge difference in mileage. (Blown struts + ancient pvc valve/air filter/spark plugs + lead foot = bad mileage.)

I don't really drive all that fast and I keep/kept up on maintenance for the most part. Maybe it's just a combination of all those factors. My old GL didn't get great mileage, like I said, 27 but not up in the low 30's and my turbo..well.

Yeah, I wasn't saying you in particular... but in general that's why old cars can vary so wildly in mileage. Certain 4x4 carb'd models are going to top out with what you got (I've had a few ;)). Certain models that were light, 2wd, or fuel injected could go higher.

Keep in mind that you'll have worse mileage if you're running ethanol-blended gas.
