WHEW STINK: Dog just got sprayed by skunk.

Post by Bheinen74 »

My dog (mostly and inside dog) just got sprayed by skunk. I was watching tv in bed about 11:15 pm tonight and smelled skunk. I wanted to go make sure my dog wasn't outside, too late. He has a doggy door, and he was outside in his fenced yard, and wouldnt come in. Evidently he had already gotten sprayed. The dog wouldn't come in the house, he was scratching at the fence alongside the house. I went to basement, looked out the basement window, and there sits the skunk, pressed against the window, near fence, outside of where the dog could get to. Came upstairs to get camera, wanted a picture. By the time i found the digi, went back to take picture, no skunk. Guess he got away. Dog was wet all over head and front legs (from the spray) I just washed him off in my shower with tomato juice and water mix out of a bucket. Damn, this night suks.
BTW he is a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier. Lots and lots of hair.......

any advice........My house still stinks. I have the ceiling fans on, windows open, it is nautious. On a side note, I arranged to get a TMIC from a 06 WRX last evening, and finalized the deal this AM. Gonna mod my 92 SS soon, hear and saw a pic that the 06 TMIC fits best.

Even i stink now from bathing the dog. update, i just took shower. This smell is kind of giving me a headache it is really bad.

Any Patric McMannus fans?

Guy driving down the road with his wife. Skunk runs out in front of him. He manages to miss the skunk. His wife asks him what he would have done if he'd hit the skunk with the car.

"Only one thing to do. Id have pulled over and burried it in the ditch, and if i was in a good mood i'd burry the skunk with it"

Douche has vinegar. And shave the dog. It'll still take a little while for the stink to go away.

Natures miracle works pretty damned good, most pet stores sell it, it is an enzyme based product but if you have used anything else before it you need to wash previous prodcut off first, it will work on everything just make sure you use the skunk formula

I second the white vinegar idea. Although that kinda stinks too.

Or like the Gooooooogle banner suggests, go to PetVetDirect.com

In August stayed at a camp site in Southern B C . The shower in the wash house had a sign that said "Dont wash your dog in the shower".

It didn't say anything about skunks.

Get a bunch of lemons, quarter them, remove the seeds, then throw the whole batch(peels, rinds and pulp) into a blender or food processor. Grind them into a liquid. Mix in equal parts with both distilled and apple cider vinegar. Warm to body temp. Dab onto the skin and let sit for a few minutes, then rinse in cold water. Can be used on people and pets.

Other things that work(usually):

Buttermilk(soak for at least an hour)
Cheap white wine
Cabbage juice
Gasoline
Seawater
and Cod liver oil(best bet for the dog, safe to eat, good for the skin and coat... Hell, some dogs love the stuff)

The cheapest way, of course is to just wait it out.

Some are almost as bad as a skunk, but they wash out easier and don't linger. I have plenty of experience with skunks...

I think PETA would have major shit fits if you soaked your dog in gasoline. Especially if you were smoking at the time.

I never said the gasoline was for the dog, that's just stupid. Plus, there are six other options listed.

Like I said, cod liver oil is your best bet for the dog. Oil up the pooch, let sit for a few minutes then rinse off with warm water.

Besides, F*%& PETA. If they really gave a damn about animals they wouldn't kill almost evey animal they "rescue"

Edit: Heres another one I've seen reccomended often.

For pets that have been sprayed, bathe the animal in a mixture of 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from drug store), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and a teaspoon of liquid detergent. After 5 minutes rinse the animal with water. Repeat if necessary. The mixture must be used after mixing and will not work if it is stored for any length of time. DO NOT STORE IN A CLOSED CONTAINER - it releases oxygen gas so it could break the container. This mixture may bleach the pet's hair. I have heard of one black Labrador retriever that was chocolate colored after this treatment. (Paul Krebaum's Recipe from Chemical & E ngineering News , October 18, 1993, p. 90).

Some additional tips. Do this outside so the volatile skunk spray does not contaminate your house. To remove residual skunk odor from your clothes and any towels or rags used in this clean up procedure, wash them with one cup of liquid laundry bleach per gallon of water.

+1 for that "skunky" smell...

I filled up yesterday in Iowa and strangely I liked the smell. It was pure joy for my senses. Unlike where I live, they have a CHOICE of regular or ethanol blended gas. I chose the real deal, and damn was it good.
