I know when the new Forester came out Subaru went around the country with a bunch of cars and held what they called a ride and drive. Could have been for carrying stuff for something like that when the Legacy was coming out. They were a smaller company back then too so it would make sense to be on a smaller scale than what they're doing now.

They also did a tour of the speed endurance record Legacies around 1989. I have a picture of me as a kid in one. I believe one of the records was 100k mi. in 19 days and change with an average speed over 130.
If I only knew at the time what that would lead to.
