Almost Subaru #4 for me... WITH BOOST, on accident!

Post by entirelyturbo »

Okay, so someone on the USMB posted a link to an 84 Subaru Turbo wagon on eBay, in Palm Coast FL. Car had a bad turbo, and the seller said he had found used turbos for $200.

Of course, I already have 3 cars, and don't have the room nor the time to be screwing around with this one. But my impulsive side got the best of me, and I wanted to at least say I gave it a chance.

Since he had found turbos for $200, I figured that was his reserve price, so I bid $150...

Turns out his reserve price was $100

So now, I'm contractually obligated to buy this car that I have NO capability of owning!

I thought it over a bit, and decided the best course of action would be to sweet-talk the big guys at the dealership to let me keep it on the lot for a month or so, until I gathered the funds together to fix it up, and then sell it. Hey, I could probably make some money off of it!

Then, I start making arrangements to pick it up. Palm Coast is about 75 miles from me, 65 of it highway driving. The seller informs me that the car is not roadworthy, that it runs, but very poorly. My friend with a Jeep does not feel comfortable towing it all the way back to Orlando with tow straps, which I understand entirely.

The arrangements were made to pick it up tonight.

So I try renting a U-Haul tow dolly. It's a 4WD car, not AWD, so I can tow it with the back wheels on the ground just like a FWD car. But the f'ing jackasses at U-Haul refused to sell me a tow dolly because their computer system said a Jeep Cherokee 4WD is incapable of towing an 84 Subaru on a tow dolly

I wish I could have told them about the time that my friend and I towed an Audi Quattro sedan on a full auto transport trailer with a 4cyl Nissan Hardbody pickup over a distance of about 30 miles, without a single problem.

Anyway, I'm going to call and bitch someone out because their website operates the same way and it said that it would allow a Cherokee to tow an 84 Subaru. Neither Budget nor Penske were open, so I already knew there was no way I was going to be able to get the car tonight.

So... I started thinking, it would probably be better if I just offer to pay the seller's eBay fees, so he's not out any money for successfully selling the car, and a little extra for the inconvenience. I called him, told him the story of how I pretty much bid on it for kicks, and offered $50 to him to cover the eBay fees, and was extremely pleased with the way he handled it. He was more than happy to accept my offer, and thanked me for trying to rectify the situation instead of just blowing him off. I just sent off a payment and left him positive feedback.

Anyway, enough blabbering. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AMEWA%3AIT

And to reward myself for thinking things over and not biting off more than I could chew, I bought myself a really nice Craftsman toolbox that was on sale for $99, the money I would have bought the car with :D

If you find a 2-door turbo let me know!

U-Haul is the worst. Try Budget, I've had better luck with them.

I agree with U-haul being the king of all shitters. I deal only with Penske, and sometimes Ryder. Yeah, they are a little pricier but their service and dependability is damn-near impecable. Then again, the company I work for does around $30k of business with them monthly, so they do go out of their way a little for me and my petty needs.

Please blackmail U-Haul Chris

Honestly, I think it's probably a good thing that U-Haul sucks. I seriously didn't need one more entrée on my plate.

I hope the poor guy finds a buyer for the car though, because I know that his main objective is just to get rid of it.

Steve, last year I found a Brat Turbo in a junkyard, right here in Central FL. Without passing go or collecting $200, I ran straight back to the office to see if they were willing to sell it. Unfortunately, they had already sent the title off to Tallahassee as scrap, which doesn't mean the car is gone for good (I could have probably gotten a salvage title) but means that the junkyard would refuse to sell me the car. I was kinda pissed, coz they should theoretically only have had to give me a bill of sale, then it would be up to me to haul it out of the yard and go get a title reinstated for it. But, like always, I had too much other shit going on at the time, and didn't pursue it. There wasn't even any rust in the bed!! ALL Brats rust in the bed!!

I've been on that sellers side of that fence before. I sold a '82 Mustang Pace Car replica with no reserve about 2 years ago. Some guy won it for just under $1000.

Then he called me a couple days after the auction and his dumb ass thought Oak Harbor, WA was in Washington DC, he was in Maryland. Needless to say, he wasn't coming and I would've been SOL until I made him the same offer you got. He sent me $50 but as I realized later, I actually ended up spending $90+ with all the other shit Ebay throws at you.

I still talk shit about that guy and transaction to this day. I will never sell another car on Ebay again, the fees are outrageous and retarded. CRAIGSLIST BITCHES!

Buyer pays shipping? Most trucking terminals have ramps to get forklifts in and out of the building. Rent a 35 ft trailer and have it trucked out.
