ok i searched but couldnt find nothing i was wondering what would i need to do i found a 98 outback with a 2.5 it has a burnt valve and i want to swap in a 2.2 what all will need to do any info will be appreciated

thanks but wrong year. im trying to put a 2.2 out of 91 legacy into a 98 outback which has a 2.5 right now. thanks in advance

Ok, to be more clear... You are on a BC (89-94)Legacy board at this moment. Read the very top of the page.

You want to try the USMB for your question, you will have much better help there. Not many here are overly familiar with a '98 Outback.

fix the burnt valve in the 2.5 engine.

it will be easier and probably run better.

Putting that old EJ22E into your Outback will be a lot of brain ache to go backwards. Things like the coil, EGR, IAC, and TPS will not be the same. Sure, you can work your way around it, but it will require changing connnectors on your wiring harness to make them work with the older sensors on the Ej22. You don't want to mess with it.

What makes you say you burnt a valve? Is that what the seller is telling you? Have an independent mechanic look at it before you go any further with this. And buying a problem car is just asking for problems. Unless you are an experienced mechanic who is going to do all repairs themselves, it's a money pit. Fixing a DOHC Ej25 isn't rocket science. But I wouldn't do it on a daily driver that's my only car when I know very little about Subarus to start with...

ok thanks it is my cousins his dad is pretty well experienced in mechanics he is getting the car for a steal i think like $100 ill let him look at this before he goes and picks the car up tomorrow

It's not a task for a novice, but while you have the engine down you might as well take care of everything else.

essentially you have to pull the head on that side of the engine off, so with that in mind I would reccomend servicing all the wear items, including seals, rings, bearings, etc.
