If I have to take the car into the shop to get a wheel bearing replaced, how much should I expect it to cost? I've gotten a couple of quotes that are so widely varied that I don't know whether to think they are ripping me off or doing bad work.
And what happens if it fails before I get it replaced?

Well, I can get away with 120 for a wheel bearing replacement or so. 60 for the bearing and 60 for the labor (one hour) but some people say I'm full of crap so...
If the bearing fails - your wheel will seize and you'll be screwed, so get it fixed if it's roaring.

Hmm. I'm having trouble finding prices like that. Cheapest I've found so far is more like $350. I'll check around some more though. At this point I think I'm going to try and pull the hub apart and get everything ready and then just have a shop press it for me.

Thats the best way to do it anyway. Its more fun that way.
One thing I have noticed (growning up in a small town) small town independant shops SOMETIMES will do things a lot cheaper than you big name brand shops. There was one garage in my town that charged $40/hour labor. When my girlfriend took her car to a ford garage they charged $80 or $90. ($1300 for a rack and pinion replacement....HAHAHA!)

At the junkyard today I found a complete hub and axle with good boots that was already mostly removed from the car. I grabbed it and walked away with it for $30 for the whole thing. I'm going to try installing it and hope it's good. They say they'll take it back within 30 days if not... the u-pull-it rules!

I just wanted to update this quickly... I installed the entire assembly last weekend. It was an AWD axle, not FWD as I previously thought (unless maybe the old one was also FWD, anyway, they were the same size). ALL noise has gone away, steering is much tighter, the old rotor had gouges in it so braking is better, etc. The car feels amazing now. All for $30 and a few hours of work.
