Free play in shifter - 5sp

Post by realfinn »

Started working on my AWD 5-sp which is in the 94 legacy wagon. I noticed that there is a huge amount of play in the shifter when its in gear (all gears). Not thiniking about it I initially thought it was probably the ball joint that the shifter goes into. When I removed the rubber boot i noticed that it wasn't that and that it isn't the clamping bolt that goes from the linkage to the shifter. I haven't ever had the tranny out of one of these...what do you guys think it could be?

+1 for shifter bushing. Check both front and rear bushings, my front one was fine but the back one was shot.

It can also be traced to the tiny bushings between the shift linkage fork and the lever itself (on a 94 it's opposite, between the shift lever fork, and the linkage joint). Also on the knuckle where the shift linkage connects to the shift arm in the transmission.

Turn In Concepts makes replacement bushings for these areas, and sells the Kartboy bushings for the front and rear bushings. I can order them for you, or you can call them up directly. Price will be the same either way.

Phil,

Does TiC sell the bushings for the joint, or just for the lever stuff?

I think just the lever itself.

BUT, I think the bushings are similar, if not identical? They look the same.

I haven't checked recently to see what's out there. I made my own custom nylon joint bushings because they didn't have anything at the time.

I made my own rear bushing before KB released theirs. I was the innovator of that product! I had it first!!! I think I had mine for almost a year long before KB released their rear bushing. I spoke the praises of the modded rear bushing, and I even made a post!

I want royalties damnit!
