Want to upgrade swaybars on '92 SS...options?
Tell me what fits or throw me some links. I'd like to do both the front and rear.
whiteline parts at PDM-racing.com
I think the biggest you can get is 22mm front 20-24r. So do that. It should work pretty well with stock spring rates or something stiffer, and you can adjust to your liking.
I just bought a 20mm front bar so I'll have 20/18. Then if I get the adjustable rear bar later they'll still be matched up.
Also consider solid endlinks. They make a pretty noticable difference.
Edit: IPD sells a 22mm Impreza front bar for $96 that I think will fit n/a cars. They list the same bar for 93-06 and don't specify wagon or sedan.

I think it is best to replace both if you can. The important thing is to not have too much of a difference either way. The front also needs to be a bit stiffer overall due to the weight distribution. If you make the rear super stiff with a huge bar you kind of throw things off and handling doesn't improve. As to what you should get, 22mm front 20-24 rear makes sense to me as a reasonable increase. 18->22mm is a 123% increase in stiffness.
I didn't realize you had an SS even though it was in the title. In that case, any GC turbo or WRX wagon front swaybar should fit, and even maybe STi bars, which gives you a lot more options up front. IPD's bar is for n/a Subarus and won't work.
In the rear I think you are stuck with early Legacy specific bars such as the whiteline adjustable. I have heard of people cutting out the bump in the spare tire well to fit other [bigger] bars.
So if you really want to you could get swaybars in like the 27mm range. That would probably be a bit much unless you're seriously tracking or auto-xing the car.

That would be good but I would recommend getting the adjustable rear bar so you can play with it to see what you like and also could go to a bigger front bar later and keep things balanced. Even or slightly bigger in the front is good. A lot of people seem to think a huge rear bar will make things better but it doesn't really. Basically instead of increasing overall grip by giving the tires a better contact patch you're just decreasing it in the rear.
After all the suspension work I've done, know what I really want? To get rid of these RE92s for a nice sticky, stiff, summer tire (but that will wait until after ski season). If you're not on good tires already you should get some if you want to take advantage of better suspension. Also, are you still on stock struts and springs?

Yah, the RE92s really do suck. Right now the car is on stock struts/springs. I would like to upgrade, but I do not want to lose any ride height as I am going to be running larger-than-stock wheels. I'll likely just get a good all-season tire...I've been looking at the Pirelli Pzero M+S, among others.

I know that when I replaced the rear links on my Impreza I could feel the difference. I have aftermarket links both front and rear on my Legacy. Certainly worth doing, in my opinion.shemoves wrote:Good to know, I definitely will then. Is there any need to upgrade the endlinks?ultrasonic wrote:I'm using the 20mm whiteline front bar. I wish I had the 22mm, or even larger. The front bar makes a huge difference... go large on the front!

I have the kartboy links and they definitely made a big difference. $180 for the set is actually less than OEM replacement links. If you have an adjustable rear bar you might want to consider Helix or Whiteline links instead though. The Kartboys are a bit shorter and some people have and problems with the links hitting the lateral links with bars set on full soft.
For now I have the suspension setup I want so I'm going to look into taking out compliance with stiffer bushings. Right now I'm trying to get urethane swaybar bushings, and I'll probably do control arm and lateral link bushings fairly soon.
